Malta recommendations?

Any recommendations for family friendly hotels or apartments in Malta? I'm hearing it's become very popular for party peeps so I'm unsure if the apart/hotels I'm seeing will be too lively Grin any advice appreciated x

You’ll want to avoid Blackpool-like Buggibaa and clubby Paceville in St Julian's. The further north you travel, the more tranquillity you will find. Mellieha is a good option with a large family-friendly Sandy beach. Db Seabank Resort is one of the most family-friendly hotels there. Hilton Malta is another popular choice for families and it had a short airport transfer.

Also would it be worth hiring a car?

We’ve found that driving in Malta can be chaotic to say the least! Have your wits about you! Roundabouts are a law unto themselves, and it can be very much a case of everyone for themselves. Don’t be offended if someone beeps their horn at you it could mean you are in the wrong, in the way, you need to speed up, you need to slow down, to let you know they are there or just a general friendly greeting!
Travelling by bus is pretty easy and cheap. You can get to most places for €2. They are clean and have air-con and you can buy your ticket directly from the driver. THey do, however, get very busy in high season so you might be waiting a while for a bus with space. From Sliema to Valletta (and vice versa) and from Valletta to the Three Cities, you can (and should) take a ferry instead of a bus since it only takes about 5 minutes to get from one point to another.

While taxis in Malta are not nearly as cheap as buses, I have used them a few times when I didn’t want to take two or more buses (and travel for 90 minutes instead of 15) to get from one place to another.

That's really good! Deffo NOT hiring a car then, sounds stressful 😂

We stayed at DB Seabank a few years ago and loved it

Cars and driving in Malta isn't as bad as it used to be. I went for work about 20 years ago and then it was terrifying, but it doesn't seem as bad now. At least they drive on the same side of the road as us, with RHD drive cars, so that's two fewer unfamiliar things to worry about compared with the rest of Europe.

I agree with the advice about Mellieha (Bay that is, Mellieha itself is the (nice and worth a visit) town up a very steep hill) but as for whether it is worth hiring a car depends on how much sightseeing you want to do and what you want to see.

If you stayed in Mellieha Bay, you could get a direct bus to Valletta (you don't want to drive there because, parking), which is worth a visit, you could also go on a boat trip to Comino (small unihabited island between Malta and Gozo) for the Blue Lagoon, good for swimming/snorkelling (sadly overrun by the instagram crowd because it is beautiful) and you can walk around the island.

You could also probably get to the Gozo Ferry port quite easily by bus or taxi as it's only a few miles and spend a day on Gozo, possibly using the hop on hop off bus (there's a timetable but it's only a suggestion of when the bus might come and I don't know if practically you could see everything), or maybe hire a taxi to take you round the island.

There's some sort of Popeye themed waterpark at the north end of the island too, which would probably be fun for young DC.

So you might decide to do those things and stay locally the rest of the time and not need to go anywhere else, and not get a car, or only get a car for a day or two. There are plenty of buses, but they're very slow - we stayed in Sliema and wanted to go to a few places and everywhere was 60-90 mins by bus even when it was only a few miles.

Definitely. plenty to see and do.

cant comment on hotels really as it’s a long tIme since I visited but our favourite was the San George Corinthia and the Corinthia Palace.

Roundabouts they treat as a series of t junctions.

droving Really not that bad.

We also stayed at DB Resort which was great - large family pools, and the family rooms had a partition so you could stay up after the children are in bed. Food was standard all-inclusive but fine.

Buses around the island are easy but baking hot, unless we were unlucky with ours!

dreamingofsun · 12/01/2023 13:02

the standard of driving is definately mental there - wouldnt hire a car, and someone we know who drives professionally also recommended not to. I think that the price of taxis can vary a lot depending on whether you book one (which is relatively cheap) or if you hail one in the street.......might be worth checking up on this.

Roseelane · 12/01/2023 13:06

Hire a car and get the ferry to Gozo. Lovely, less built up and touristy.

theshadeofgreen · 12/01/2023 13:09

Another vote for DB Seabank.
We went a few months ago and are already looking at going back.... very unlike us as we always say we wouldn't revisit when the world is so huge but we had a wonderful time.

wouldukissafrog · 12/01/2023 13:24

Went to a DB hotel in St. Paul's bay this year. Was ok but wouldn't go back and locally the whole place has so much renovation going on it's like a building site everywhere

Was a bit of a dud holiday

DrMadelineMaxwell · 13/01/2023 00:08

We went to Melleiha and stayed in the seabank. The kids would go back in a heartbeat but it is expensive.
We did a bus trip to Valetta and a boat trip for snorkelling in the blue lagoon on Comino. Just gorgeous. Best buy for that apart from full face snorkel masks were the water trainers we bought that could be worn into the sea as its rocky on the shore.

you crack me up the driving is fine. Just need to understand the rules as they use them.
driven in Malta several times.

dreamingofsun · 13/01/2023 11:38

maybe you live in a big city somewhereover, or maybe you werent near valletta. Either that or you must have nerves of steel. I really want keen on how the local drivers zipped in between the traffic and overtook.
