I am thinking of a holiday to Thailand in summer holidays. im aware its the rainy season, does it generally just pour down once a day? Are there certain areas that have less rain? is it a completely stupid idea?

if it isn't any recommendations to areas? we are going with 11 year old and want a mixture of beach, culture, water parks, interesting days out.

I wouldn’t go then, no.

We went to Hua hin in Aug 3/4 years ago. It's 3 hours from Bangkok airport so not ideal but it was fine, we pre booked a transfer and there's lots to see en route. The kids loved the waterpark nearby, we had a great day there. We stayed at the Hyatt and the Hilton, both had water slides. It was very humid but although we had some rain it wasn't too bad at all and didn't last long. It was similar to Florida in the summer where there's a downpour and then it clears. A few days it rained a few times but didn't last long. We would go again in the summer holidays. We stayed in Bangkok before the flight home.

I went in July some years ago. 2 islands, Koh Samui and Koh Phangyang. It was humid and did rain quite a bit, but it was short and fierce, with some incredibly loud thunderstorms at night. It was lovely and sunny rest of the time, beautiful beaches, friendly pp and cheap, delicious food! Only thing I hated was the 15 hour flight, I think kids would really struggle with that tbh.

I've been to Thailand many times and have never been out off by the summer months. There's definitely some areas that may be dryer than others so that might be worth looking into. Also, when it rains, it's not like here. It's often at night and very short but heavy. It's actually lovely and cools the air - as long as you're not caught out in it 😂

@cheesenpickle which part?

cheesenpickle · 07/01/2023 14:13

@IceStationStallion i don't have a particular area in mind @notthebloodyfootballagain mentioned there are dryer areas in summer months so i would be interested to know which they are. im looking for beach, waterparks , culture and interesting day trips for 11 year old.

We’re currently on Phuket - that definitely ticks your boxes can’t comment on that july weather but currently is beautiful

seems to be loads to do we’ve done a half island tour, the Phuket elephant sanctuary- it’s the only ethical one, got a boat trip planned to phi phi - there’s a few water parks and plenty to do.

we flew via Bangkok as want a few days three.

In the summer holidays you’re best off on the Gulf of Thailand side - the rains on the andaman coast will be quite full on.
Have a look at Hua Hin/Pranburi, Koh Samui, Ko Phangnan and Ko Tao. You could also consider a trip up to Chiang Mai - I like being up there in the rainy season.

Thailand is amazing, your child will probably love it. But I wouldn’t go then, I’d go Xmas if possible when it’s gorgeous

From Hua Hin you would definitely manage water parks and interesting trips. There are wild elephants at Kui Buri national park, the cave systems at Phraya Nakhon etc. The beach isn’t much to shout about down that coast but we really like it in the summer holidays. Favourite hotel was the Evason at Pranburi but it’s been rebadged as a Wyndham recently. Loads to do for kids and a really chilled atmosphere.

I've been to Chiang Mai and Chiang Rai in July. We had torrential rain non stop for several days. But if that's the only time you can go it's still worth visiting .
