Singapore help

We’re planning a trip to Asia for later this year, and just realised that the weekend we were planning to be in Singapore is the Grand Prix weekend (which also explains why the hotels were even more extortionate than we were expecting!!). Does anyone know what it’s like there during a Grand Prix - is everywhere so packed it’s hard to enjoy the touristy things? Our alternative option is to switch our itinerary and start the trip in Singapore and end in Kuala Lumpur on that weekend instead (with time on an island in between).

Any thoughts greatly appreciated!

We have to singapore a few times but don't remember the grand Prix being on, so I can answer general questions

I'd think I'd do one of two things, go, and go to the Grand Prix. If it's on, you might as well embrace it.

Otherwise switch your trip around as suggested.

Have a lovely time! We went on the way to Bali for our honeymoon in 2010 - I loved it!

Either go to the actual Grand Prix - get a walkabout ticket and you can wander around, there's loads of entertainment included pre and post race (loads of people go for the partying rather than the F1) - or change weekends. It will be very busy in parts of Singapore such as Clarke Quay etc, Marina Bay will be largely closed off as its part of the track/course although places like Sentosa and the Night Safari won't be affected. Hotels are usually 30% more expensive (mandated by the govt) and restaurants and bars will be more pricey and very busy.

Unless you want to see the F1, it seems bonkers to pay the additional costs for a busier place when you say you can easily change dates.

(I've been to the F1 there quite a few times - I used to live in Asia - and its an amazing experience).

Unless you want to see the race (which would be cool if you are into it) I would change the dates if you can. I think DD and I arrived the day after the race, they were dismantling the safety barriers but it was still hard to access some places and obviously everywhere was busy.

Change the dates unless you're watching the race.

It's not packed during that weekend and lots of the tourist stuff is untouched by it (eg the gardens) but the race closes off many streets, including ones you might want to see.

You do kind of spend your time working your way around avoiding the circuit.

That said, I went for the race and it was amazing so well worth watching if you like F1 at all.

I would avoid it if I were you and change the dates so you are in KL that weekend instead. It takes over lots of things and will be annoying. KL is lovely! (I live here)

Agree, if you go that weekend go to embrace it - lots of side entertainment and usually good bands. Any kids and if so how old are they? That might help decide if they'd like it or be bored.
If it's of no interest flip the holidays and avoid the mark up and inconvenience.

Justforthissnippet · 07/01/2023 06:10

I live here and agree the F1 is awesome, but it does mean some of the central streets are blocked off and traffic is a bit heavier. Central
hotels are heaving as lots rent out rooms with balconies overlooking the track for corporate hospitality.

If it makes no difference, I would flip the dates around.

We did 2 nights in Singapore not knowing it was GP weekend, we couldn’t get access to some areas but still enjoyed ourselves. We had a cheap and cheerful hotel out of the tourist centre.
