European city break with 6 year old and 14 month old

Looking for recommendations for a European city break in August with a six year old, a 14 month old and a DH who doesn't like the heat (can probably cope with max 25 degrees but would prefer 22 or less...)

I'm thinking possibly Hamburg or Berlin but wondered if anyone else had any exciting ideas? We like good food, a child friendly culture, museums, walks (albeit not hiking)

Any suggestions?

Many thanks in anticipation.

Oslo is lovely. Lots of museums, the ski lift, boat trips. Public transport is cheap. Wine is not.

Copenhagen or Stockholm, pretty much everywhere on the continent it's gonna be hot, I expect.

If you go to Hamburg, you want to check going to Lübeck by train (1/2 hour or so), it's a great small city with an amazing interactive museum about the Hanse (medival trading society) which is very well done in English.

Stockholm may be worth looking at as well.

Agreed - we went to Berlin in August a few years ago and it was over 30 degrees! I've heard good things about Copenhagen for small children.

Vienna is lovely. Not sure on August temps there. Scandinavia probably cooler!

PAFMO · 06/01/2023 08:05

Was going to say Berlin.
Though, yes, Scandinavia will be cooler.

MyBuggyIsOutToGetMe · 06/01/2023 08:12

Stockholm, definitely. Boat trips round the archipelago! Or even Helsinki, which is lower key but lovely and would be easy with young children.

ThePoshUns · 06/01/2023 08:13

Mainland Europe gets very hot in August, especially in built up cities. Most Parisians fo example decamp to the coast where it's slightly cooler for the month of August ( those with money of course)

Copenhagen or Gothenberg. Bergen is also great but expensive.

Ljubljana. Beautiful, friendly and compact. Full of dragons. A castle. Museums (including an illusions museum). Easy day trips to Lake Bled and caves. Lovely food and drink.

Copying and pasting from a similar thread (see below), although I don't think they had children, so you'll probably not be sitting doing people watching.
We took our DS there when he was a baby and facilities were good, people were accommodating.
It definitely won't be too hot!
I would also second the recommendation for Copenhagen.

"Reykjavík is good for a short break. It's a compact city and doesn't have a huge amount to do, but you can do trips out to the so called "Golden circle" or go whale watching and it has a nice vibe for doing the people watching thing."

Nantes/ Brittany coast lots to see and do by seaside and in the historical centre

perugia compact and handsome city - east to explore countryside on outskirts

prague - excellent parks, kids love the trams.

We’ve done a lot of city breaks as a family since my eldest (now 9) was tiny. As a family of 4, with DD 9, DS 4, we’ve loved Copenhagen the most and have visited a couple of times. There is so much to do for kids and weather when we visited in august was pleasant.

Lots of parks, boat trips, Tivoli, great street food, zoo, amazing science museum, I could go on! We want to go back again as there is still so much to do.

Thanks all - @pinklady123456 that's really helpful, thank you. Any recommendations for which area to stay please?

@buonnatale We stayed in an airbnb in Frederiksberg the first time which was lovely, it felt very family friendly with lots of local restaurants, cafes and shops. A couple of stops on the metro from the main area - you could probably walk it in 30 mins but the metros are very frequent.

In May we stayed in an aparthotel in Vesterbro which is very central for the train station, Tivoli and walking to all the sights (we didn't use the metro that time apart from to go to the Science museum). However it is much busier, especially on a weekend as its one of the main areas for eating and drinking and might not be the best choice for very young kids. We did like it though, just be aware it can be quite lively on Fridays and Saturdays but a completely different chilled vibe every other night with lots of famlies about.
