Tips for family holiday in Tyrol?

We're thinking of going in summer half term and would love any tips on places to stay or visit and things to do.

Which dates exactly? Many of the summer activities and facilities (cable cars, outdoor pools etc.) only open for the summer season from around mid-May.

LIZS · 04/01/2023 21:42

Agree many will be running weekends and bank holidays only from Ascension weekend until schools break up.

IScreamMonday · 05/01/2023 18:19

Ah that's good to know, thanks. I checked plenty of hotels were open as it is between seasons and as they were I assumed that meant things were running. We don't need organised stuff like kids clubs etc. but cable cars would be pretty handy!

@IScreamMonday It would really help if you posted the exact dates that you're looking to travel. Some of the larger resorts will open earlier than others, so they might be open when you want to visit. Last summer the first cable cars local to me opened on 7th May, but most opened first on May 25th, which was Ascension Day in 2022.

FYI - in 2023, Ascension Thursday is May 18th

Half term for us is first week in June so it's a tricky one I guess

Are you a Chalet School fan? If so visit Pertisau which is the place the first Austrian books are based on, there is a plaque to the Author Elinor Brent Dyer there & it is thought the Alpenhof hotel is the building that the original Chalet School building would have been.

@IScreamMonday

The first week of June makes things easier, not trickier! Most of the cable cars and other attractions will be opening for the summer season so there will be more things to do than there would have been at the beginning of May and you'll be in Austria before the main tourist season starts in July.

When people say "Tyrol" they often mean somewhere with mountains, "Sound of Music" landscapes and lakes - all of which are spread across Tyrol and Salzburgerland.

Local to where I live there are cable cars, hiking trails, zip-wires and a "Go Ape" style climbing park (one of the largest in Europe). Mountain bike trails, and cycle routes in the valley for easier cycling (bikes and e-bikes available for rent). A tree-top walk. Rafting, lake swimming, an outdoor pool complex, caves, an old silver mine. Salt mines. Paragliding. A veteran steam railway. A huge spa complex. Cake shops.

Salzburg has a castle, an Old Town, museums, chocolate shops, cafes and more cake shops and much more ...

Whereabouts in the Tyrol? We had a lovely hiking holiday in the south Tyrol (the Italian part). Even if you don't want any major hikes a visit to Tre Cime just for the views from the road and the mountain hut would be worthwhile!

We stayed at lake ossiach three times at differing places. My preferred was staying near the top of the mountain as had lots of fab walks and we went to the lake in the afternoon to cool off - not sure whether it will be really hot in june as the lakes take some time to warm up and they are mountain fed.

There's a beautiful mountain top lake (cold) with diving board which was fun, the usual tree top adventures. On a rainy day, there is a spa nearby. Summer time tobogganing is great fun, a great monkey sanctuary, the Pyramidenkogel where you can slide your way down. There is loads to do and most lakes have the usual platforms/inflatables.

@Havanananana whereabouts is that? Sounds brilliant!

Havanananana · 09/01/2023 20:11

Pinzgau, Austria. (Zell am See, Saalbach, Leogang area in Salzburgerland).

MeghanThyStallion · 09/01/2023 21:57

Thanks! I've been skiing in Zell am See a few times but never in the summer. Definitely one for the list.

NCTDN · 13/01/2023 08:15

Which part of the Tyrol region are you staying in?

We were looking at flying in to Innsbruck

Innsbruck is easy for StAnton, Seefeld, Lermoos, Obertauern, .Solden, Mayrhofen and the Tyrol towards Soll,or the Sud Tyrol in italy. A fair distance from likes of Salzburg and .Zell am See though. Have a look at kinderhotels which have facilities in case weather turns dodgy.
