Where to stay in Lisbon

Hi. I’ve booked flights to Lisbon in April with my 11 and 8 year old for a week. For those who have been, where would you recommend staying? Initial thoughts were to stay very central and then hire a car for 3 days to travel out to other areas such as Sintra. Any recommendations welcome 🤗

Not sure you need a car tbh, trains to Sinatra, Cascais etc. are easy, cheap and accessible. Parking in those places can be a pain. You may prefer not to stay in areas such as Graca with kids to avoid uphill walks but if you don’t mind that would recommend Dona Graca Lisbon apartments.

@JWR really useful to know that a car may not be needed - thanks. Any other areas to avoid or that you’d recommend?

What about Principe Real?

Sunrun · 04/01/2023 20:42

We stayed here and loved it. It's really central and we had a 2 bedroom apartment that's part of the hotel with it's own kitchen www.lisbonartstay.com/

It’s sensible to take normal street safe precautions walking from Martim Moniz uphill at night for example but tbh central Lisbon always feels very safe to me. The “dealers” don’t target people of a certain age or with kids IME and I’ve never seen real hassle from them.

I really would ditch the car idea, parking and roads are not easy in the centre and public transport is cheap and easy.

@MissAmbrosia looks amazing but not available on the dates we are there unfortunately.

I wouldn't hire a car! The trains/metro is really easy to use and cheap. We stayed very central and took the train to Cascais for the day but next time I'd stay in Cascais, especially with kids. It's a lovely small resort and the city is stunning but very hilly and busy so the little ones might prefer to escape back to beach/pool after sightseeing.

Agree, it is really easy to get around on the metro. We stayed at the Inspira Hotel, it was amazing.

we stayed at the Iberostar selection which was was a little out of town but was lovely and had a great pool area

The www.oceanario.pt/en is amazing and there's a cable car ride next to the centre. A tram ride through the old city is wonderful or try a Segway tour. Agree with no need for a car - public transport is cheap and plentiful whereas driving can be a bit scary (I live in Portugal and am used to it now but you do need lots of practice!).

Eyesopenwideawake · 04/01/2023 21:18

Oh, and Lisbon zoo is well worth a visit.

TheFlis12345 · 04/01/2023 21:18

Definitely don’t get a car, trains are so cheap and easy. Parking at Sintra in particular is terrible!

We went a few years ago with our then 1 year old DD and stayed here: abnb.me/PNkXwJEakwb

It was such a great location. Not right in the centre but within 20 min walk. Bus stop and train station at the bottom of the road, all of which connected well to the tourist spots.

The apartment itself had plenty of space for us and there were actually some restaurants nearby so we didn't always have to go back into town for dinner.

Vanillalime · 05/01/2023 01:05

I would stay somewhere between the Praca de Comercio & Rossio Sq. This area is all on the flat, but if you go about 4 streets to the left or right it starts to get very hilly.

Also agree you do not need a car. You can easily get a train to Sintra and a tram/train to Belem (for Pasteis de Belem!) and Cascais.

kkelly82 · 05/01/2023 17:16

@Vanillalime really useful to know names of certain areas of worth looking into. Thank you.

We went to Lisbon recently and stayed in the Vincii Liberdade on Av Liberdade. It was a metro ride from the centre but the area was quiet and very tranquil. When in the centre at night (Rossio, and the hilly bit up to the cathedral) I did see hotels I'd looked at and was glad I'd not picked them because they were in very busy touristy areas with lots of noise going on till quite late. Might not bother you but worth thinking about.
