Has anyone done this and could recommend an itinerary? Looking at late March / early April for about 12 days.

We first took DT’s to India when they were about 14. Flew to Delhi for a few days sightseeing and then flew to Amritsar. We then had a driver to go to Dharamsala, Pragpur and Shimla. We got the Toy Train to Kalka and the Shatabdi Express back to Delhi.
We went in March - DT’s loved it. Stayed in some amazing quirky properties.

My family must be fake Indians as we're apparently not from the "real India"!

I’m talking about holiday destinations not people. I do hope you are not an academic!

@Ihavekids
No. I gave not stated there. You have put 2+2 together and made 5.

OK, so in what sense are Goa and Kerala not "real India", then? What is "real India"?

Staying in the best hotels in India
then after a hotel buffet breakfast, being driven around in an air conditioned car with a driver to take a peek at the poor people, then back to your hotel restaurant for dinner.

But if they live in Goa or Kerela, apparently they don’t live in “Real India”. Where do they live then?

We are due to visit India at easter as well.

I'm so worried about how we will get our 7 year old to have his jabs for India. It's going to be a nightmare.
Does anyone have any advice please

If your 7 yo is up to date with routine recommended vaccinations for the UK, then I think they will need typhoid and HepA. Typhoid can be given orally in capsule form for a 7 yo, but if it's two needles then maybe see if they can do them at the same time.
It will be the same as how you prepared him/her for pre-school booster (the first ones they are properly aware of in advance).
Be truthful - it will hurt a bit, but not for long and then you get a treat!

In my experience getting my son to take the anti-malarial drugs for the whole duration was much harder, but depending on where you are going, what you're doing and whether you have any underlying health conditions (or are visiting people who do), you may not need to take them. I would prefer to plan a trip only to low risk areas so as not to need to take them.
