We are planning on a holiday for a week in Ireland in August. Can anyone recommend where to go with a 2 year old and 6 year old. Looking for exploring, beach type of holiday maybe some where that has indoor activities incase it rains.
Thanks

Do you have tesco vouchers? you get a lot of money off using them on the ferry !

NashvilleQueen · 11/01/2023 19:49

Have you priced up accommodation yet? I have to say that every time I get a notion for a trip around Ireland I just can't justify the cost of hotels. It's cheaper to go all inclusive to the med IME

toofishy · 11/01/2023 19:52

take a look at Mayo Coastal Cottages we have booked through them some nice houses
But yes it's not a budget destination that's for sure

Holiday in Ireland is ££££££. We have done a 7 day holiday on the West Coast a few times. You will be doing well to find decent accommodation (2 bed self catering cottage) for 1500 euro per week in summer. Dinner and drinks for 4 on 4-5 nights, couple of takeaways at the cottage, coffees, ice creams, few drinks at the pub daily and attraction tickets - we needed 1500+ spending money. Plus petrol and 250 to stock up the self catering cottage for the week of breakfasts and lunches. It's very expensive to holiday in Ireland.

We almost always use Irish Ferries - usually prefer their ferries. But it is worth checking Stena Line too.

Sparklingblah · 11/01/2023 21:12

Tbh I think that is about the cost of the ferries at the moment. Brutal!!

mathanxiety · 12/01/2023 01:00

Have you looked at Stranraer/ Cairnryan to Larne? Short trip, prices may be lower.

Roosty38 · 12/01/2023 13:20

@B84101 just had a look at trabolgan and they are refurbishing the whole site so not taking bookings. Looks good for next time though

Dingle definitely, went with my in-laws a few years ago. It's was great and very beautiful. Niece and nephew were only 2 and 6 at time and they had a great time.

Roosty38 · 12/01/2023 13:24

What are taxis like in ireland? Not that we will be getting many. Just if we fancy a drink one evening. Its 15 minute drive from where we are staying in stradbally to dungarvan. Is it easy to get taxi?

Waterford is fab and very overlooked by tourists. Tramore is a lovely seaside resort with a huge beach, amusement park and nice cafes and chip shops. Dunmore East is a small fishing village with a great family beach and outdoor activities, then there's the usual cinemas and swimming pools around the city for rainy days. You'll have a great time!

toofishy · 12/01/2023 13:26

yes it is easy as long as it's not really late!!
it's really quite a civilised placeBlush

turkeyboots · 12/01/2023 18:41

Dungarvan is a big foodie town so enjoy! Stradbally Bay is lovely too, as is Bunmahon nearby. Am sure you'll find a taxi

Strabally is a town in Laois, a whole other place.

Flowersinthebasement · 12/01/2023 18:54

Have a look at the Waterford Greenway, Bunmahon and Clonea Strands, Dungarvan, and the Gold Coast. Tramore perfect for adults and kids alike, it's made for it.

Waterford is highly underrated, far less crowded than the chi chi places like Dingle and West Kerry. Great climate too if you're lucky!

Wishing you a happy holiday.

MrsPetty · 13/01/2023 14:25

As we say West is best. Drive straight across the county when you arrive and don’t stop until you cross the bridge onto Achill Island! Most westerly inhabited point in Europe, great beaches, good food. An hour from Westport. Watch the Banshees of Inishirin (if you’ve got a strong stomach 😂) it was filmed here.

ffsagain123 · 13/01/2023 21:07

@MrsPetty we've just watched this, brilliant.

There's a Stradbally in Waterford and Galway too.

Have you checked if the cottage could provide a cot?

I'm in Waterford City if you have any questions.

mathanxiety · 17/01/2023 20:34

We used to go on holiday in Waterford when I was a child, in what has now been rebranded as 'the copper coast'. It's really lovely, and off the touristy path. There are nice little towns inland off the coast too.

knitpicker · 17/01/2023 20:40

Ardmore is a lovely village to visit, nice cafes and big beach. Youghal has some interesting buildings for rainy days
