Milan - Bernina Express help

We would like to travel from Milan on the Bernina Express route to St.Moritz but we also want to stop for a couple of hours at Diavolezza. Apparently this isn’t possible via the Bernina Express and we would have to book the normal train to hop on hop off. I can’t find where to book the normal trains though online. Would it make more sense to travel to St.Moritz then visit Diavolezza on the way back? so take the Bernina Express on the way there and then take the normal trains all the way back? Also if we have to book on the day… what if there’s no spaces left and how can we get a timetable does anyone know? I’m open to suggestions on which route to take but really wanted to stop off at Diavolezza because I want to actually get out and explore a bit and go on the cable car. I don’t want to book a ski holiday because I have no interest in skiing but I want to see the scenery. I’ve also read about making sure you catch the trains in the daylight so not to leave it too late, so we would have to get up for 6am.

The Swiss trains website is Sbb.ch
There is an app - you can also buy tickets on it.

I’ve just had a look on the official website (thanks @Swimswam )
I can indeed get on off as long as I book each journey separately. So I could book the following-

  1. Tirano to Diavolezza - stay 2 hours
  2. Diavolezza to St Moritz for the view
  3. St Moritz back to Tirano or I could just go straight back from Diavolezza and miss out St Moritz, would I be missing out on much?
  4. Then find our way back to Milan somehow I haven’t checked that route yet.
Would anyone recommend taking the Bernina Express back from St Moritz would it be a nicer view than the normal trains?
