do baby monitors work on board channel ferries?

We're going from Portsmouth - St Malo later this year and reserved a cabin so DS can have a nap. But it's suddenly occurred to me to wonder if a baby monitor will work on board because of all the steel decks etc. I know you can't listen to your car radio once you're inside the hull.

Has anyone else tried this?

Tbh i wouldn't be leaving my child alone inside a cabin! Could you not stay with him, and maybe sit and read a book or something?

ilovespring · 03/02/2008 22:13

Are you joking? Leaving your child... what if you hit a storm?

goshy gosh!

lucy5 · 03/02/2008 22:18

I hope you were joking, there is no way I would leave a child in a cabin.

thelittleElf · 03/02/2008 22:18

I'm almost hoping this is meant to be a joke! and not a very funny one at that!

theyoungvisiter · 03/02/2008 22:23

oh dear - sorry - not a joke!

I wasn't planning on going very far - we'll be a party of 6 and will have 2 cabins (hopefully adjacent) so was thinking of going to sit in the other one while DS napped.

But yes, plan b is staying in the cabin with him, just very boring as he is a light sleeper.

take a book!

thelittleElf · 03/02/2008 22:27

Well for the sake of a boring few hours, you can enjoy your holiday knowing he is safe .

Not worth risking the worst happening imo!

Octothechildherder · 03/02/2008 22:39

Ferries are full of complete freaks

(((sweeping generalisation but imhe totally true)))

moljam · 03/02/2008 22:40

how old is your baby?it doesnt make a difference imo but just wondered

dilbertina · 03/02/2008 22:40

ok basics first.
How long is this ferry journey?

theyoungvisiter · 03/02/2008 22:42

He's nearly 2.

I'm quite surprised you're all so shocked - I wasn't thinking of going to the bar or anything - only next door!

OP posts:
dilbertina · 03/02/2008 22:44

and is it day time or night time

just realised that your question is actually "will baby monitor work?"

but anyway not to let the actual question get in the way (no idea sorry!)

I'll join in with general " should I leave dc in cabin" which everyone has an opinion on!

Could you call the ferry company and ask? I don't think you're insane incidentally

theyoungvisiter · 03/02/2008 22:50

it's a long journey (10 hours) and nighttime. We'll put DS down as soon as we get on the ferry and was thinking I might want to eat a meal in the next door cabin with the rest of the family before retiring to bed with DS, but obviously not if we can't hear DS.

Obviously if we end up with cabins far apart I won't even consider it - I'm not going to go wandering off round the ship and leave DS ! But I've been told we'll probably be allocated adjacent cabins as we are a family.

thank you spicemonster! I was beginning to wonder if I was a nutcase

However I probably should have made plan clear before posting - reading back my OP I can see it might have sounded like I was off to the disco...

LOL TYV - "I want to go and play the slot machines in the casino - I'm leaving baby DS on deck, do you think he'll stay on board if I tie him up with a dog lead?"

I'd go and eat in the restaurant in shifts, probably, if there are enough family members to make this viable. If cabins are anything like when I last went on a ferry, they're a bit titchy to eat dinner in.

theyoungvisiter · 03/02/2008 22:59

perhaps that's the answer HM. (restaurant shifts, I mean, not dog lead )

TBH I suspect that DS will be far too excited to go to bed before midnight and DH and I will probably flake out long before he does. I was more just interested to know if it was an option.

However, good to know we are united on the moral outrage of gambling channel-hopping child neglecters. As you were folks...

most importantly....enjoy your holiday! (do you wish you hadn't asked yet?)

nannyL · 04/02/2008 10:21

they DO work on cruise ships if it helps.

You need to have an english plug socket though!, do you get plugs in your cabin on Ferrys?
