Summer in Copenhagen and Stockholm- tips please

We (me , DH and Dd (16)) are flying to Copenhagen and then going by train to Stockholm over 2 weeks in late July/early August 2023. At DD's request we are going to theme park at each. DH (and me) looking forward to the Vasa museum .
We like mooching in little shops, visiting museums and art galleries, walking by seafronts , eating biscuits and cakes.
Any tips and suggestions welcome.

I visited Christiania in 1994, it was an 'interesting' place. I wonder what its like now.

Forgot to say- in Copenhagen- get the train/bus to Dragor- beautiful little fishing village - only about 5miles out near airport-or get metro to airport and a cab . Ice cream in Denmark was fantastic- get what they call soft ice dusted in cocoa powder- best I've had in the world.

I came on here to recommend Dragør. It never gets mentioned on these threads!

Canal trip in Copenhagen? (It goes from Nyhavn and remember to bring an obligatory six pack to drink a beer en route).

Re. Christiania, you can get a tour with a guide which I thoroughly recommend (did it once with work). The tour guide will be a resident and will likely give you lots of stories.

Both cities are great for just meandering about in.

Love Skansen and the Wasa museum in Stockholm is brilliant.

Really love all these ideas. Thank you everyone

From Copenhagen, you can get the train out to Louisiana art gallery which is set in beautiful parkland with views over the water to Sweden.
Further along the same train line, is Helsingor (?). I really enjoyed a visit to the maritime museum there.

@Pawtucketbrew - so do I- I love both these cities in slightly different ways. Stockholm is a bit more dramatic looking- a bit more 'Prague' maybe- whereas I think Copenhagen is a bit more funkier maybe, like a smaller Berlin .

One big difference by the way is that Stockholm has Uber (and Amazon) etc- Copenhagen doesnt allow them and taxis are mental expensive- however metro is very good

We’re in Sweden at the moment (near Stockholm), definitely agree with all the suggestions so far, the ghost tours in Gamla Stan are great (and cheap!).

Your DD will enjoy Gröna Lund :) The Gröna Lund website has a facility for letting you prebook entry to specific rides so you don't have to queue, and can go on quite a few rides in quick succession. Lots of the rides don't require long queueing times, but a few did, so I was glad of the opportunity.

The royal palace in Copenhagen is good if you're interested in palaces. You can also easily get out to Helsingør to visit Hamlet's castle - Kronborg Castle.

In Sweden, if you can manage a trip to a glass factory (there are some south of Stockholm) that's worth it, and you can buy lovely glass there much cheaper than in Stockholm. There's a Danish glass factory too in Odense, near the Hans Christian Andersen house, but that's on a different island to Copenhagen.

Copenhagen - recommend a train up the coast to Helsingor and also a trip to Odense which is delightful as well as the usual tourist stuff in Copenhagen.

Will you be stopping off anywhere between Copenhagen and Stockholm? I loved Malmo. Its wonderful to watch the sun set there over the Oresund.

Stockholm - I loved the abba museum but underwhelmed by the Vasa. Have not spent much time there to recommend much.

I enjoyed a trip up to Louisiana Museum of Modern Art north of Copenhagen. A nice little collection in beautiful grounds and a smashing cafe. It’s a short train ride. Helsingborg castle (Elsinore) was also worth a visit. I also came across some fabulous allotments in Sodermalm, across from Gamla Stan in Stockholm. Tantolunden, I think.

Helsingor

Crikeyalmighty · 29/12/2022 20:25

@Adultchildofelderlyparents We loved Malmo too- used to go a lot-Lund is also very lovely and 40 mins on train from Copenhagen

Yes, I m hoping to do this too, perhaps also hiring a stuga for a few days on the lake side for a bit of fresh water wild swimming, and BBQs. Stuga being a little country cottage, for getting away from it all. A dacha if you like.

We loved it. First time for us, but I’d say if you have adventurous and non-whingy kids then go for it. My youngest is quite petite and has fairly low stamina, and the abundance of electric scooters helped to take the edge off on the days we did a lot of walking. We did a couple of big bus tours too which were great as we only spent 2/3 days in each location. We wanted to do the main hit list and get a feel for the cities rather than wandering too far off the beaten track, so, yes we were mainly in the tourist parts but the train journeys in between gave us some of the most spectacular views we’ve ever seen. Spent a few quid, mind you, but the memories will last forever. Now planning another inter rail trip for next summer, hopefully through Switzerland and Italy.
