Xmas 2023 - where would you go

I have a complicated relationship with my family. DH’s family scattered around the UK. As a result xmas is either stressful (with my family) or involves travelling at the worst time of the year to be on motorways (DH family)

my ideal Xmas involves me, Dh and 2xDC at home with no visitors. The only downside of this is the (stately homes-style) FOG of pressure from family members suggesting we ought to be hosting them

after 20 years lobbying, DH has finally come round to the idea of going away for Xmas, so the benefit of it being just us 4 with no pressure to have any family, as we will be away.

so where should we go? I am
overwhelmed by options so need some inspiration/ advice…

  • not long haul or hot - Ideally we wouldn’t travel by plane (though could be convinced) … the strike action this year has put me off in case we get stuck somewhere
  • we are based in SE England so Eurostar/ ferry and car could work… train would be ideal
  • no longer than one day’s travel
  • somewhere with a Christmassy vibe - eldest DC is Xmas obsessed so need to sell it to her.
  • somewhere where there will be a nice restaurant for a special dinner on Xmas day - I don’t want to have to cook
  • somewhere where everything won’t shut down for days eg shops open/ museums open etc

what am I not thinking about?

any ideas?

(keen to book soon in case DH changes his mind!)

If you want to drive I would got to france or better still Germany. Look at the Black Forest- it's a days drive from you but doable without an overnight stop if you are good travellers, there may even be snow

Lapland could work though would involve a flight.

Brugges

Yes my thought was Bruges?

We had a great Xmas in Berlin one year. Highly recommend. Fantastic Xmas markets for those who like the christmassy vibes and we did some fun light show type things. Xmas eve is the main celebration in Germany which meant on Xmas day most things were open so easy to eat out if you wanted.

Great ideas - thank you!

Black Forest and Bruges or Ghent are all gorgeous at Christmas. Not sure about opening hours but touristy places will definitely still have restaurants open
