Knowsley Safari Park - worth going tomorrow in the cold?

Anyone been recently cos it's been 20 odd years since I went! Is it all mainly the actual driving around safari thing or is there lots of walking around outside stuff?

DS (18 months) loves animals and there's only so many times you can take him round the pet shop before they get fed up with you! Just trying to figure out if its worth paying £12 to go tomorrow, because if there's lots of walking around outside in the crap weather required I might give it a miss.

What dya think?

Is it open? The safari park near us closes for the winter....

If it is, then I have heard great reports about it, and chester zoo?

geordiemacminx · 02/02/2008 19:45

Yes it is open - sorry I'm sure you checked.

talktothebees · 02/02/2008 19:46

you drive through it. Not sure how many animals will be wandering about though in the bitter cold? How far away from it are you?

If he likes birds, Martinmere is another good option.

bohemianbint · 02/02/2008 19:46

It looks like it's open from 10.30am...

I'm dying to go to Chester Zoo but it's all outside pretty much and the forecast for tomorrow is grim. We were going to the Blue Planet but had to postpone til next weekend.

Hmmm...hadn't thought of that talktothebees. Lions and the like aren't going to be crazy about the snow and gales, are they. We're about an hour away.

He does like birds too - will check out Martinmere. Thanks everyone for replies!

I haven't been for about 6 years but it was great when we went. As long as it's not too cold/ wet, the animals will be out. Most of it is driving but there is an area where you can park and see things like penguins/ seals and a parrot show or something.

We went on a cold day in Feb, I think and they let us drive round twice.

just looked at their website - it says pedestrians £7

bohemianbint · 02/02/2008 19:51

Pedestrians?!!

Jesus, wouldn't fancy that!

They have a bus for pedestrians, people in soft tops and 4x4's

talktothebees · 02/02/2008 19:52

and if you're anywhere near warrington and want animals for free walton gardens has a little zoo with a donkey, goats, birds and squirrels (from memory)

You do have to pay £2 or so to park but you;ll feel less swizzled if all the animals are hiding from the gales

I want to go to all these place now rubbish blinking winter weather

gigglewitch · 02/02/2008 19:56

Drove past it this afternoon and it seems to be open.
check the prices, we went with some students i work with (sen) and it cost a small fortune. hopefully that is down to the fact that we were driving a minibus

Talktothebees,

Walton gardens is fab, i'll second that.

Ours used to enjoy the fish at Stapely Gardens too.

Chester Zoo has lots of inside attractions, bat caves, aquarium, jaguars, vivarium, chimps, rhinos, giraffes, elephants and cafes. Oh and the tropical house.

Secret is to warm up in one warm house and then make a dsah for it to the next one!
