How rude! I’m looking for recommendations from people who’ve stayed there.

We stayed at the sandhotel. The rooms are on the smaller side but it was wonderful, the staff were great and the location perfect.

Ps ignore the earlier person I don't know why people have to be so rude and unhelpful. So sad

Oh don't be so rude!

OP, I understand absolutely why you'd like a recommendation from someone who's actually been there. My DD and her DH have been to Reykjavik twice this past year; they used three different hotels, two of which were central. I'll find out what they were (they were happy with both.)

They also stayed at the Grand, which is lovely, but not central.

unclebuck · 14/12/2022 08:43

I would look at apartments as they come with parking and the price of eating out is very very high so you can save a lot that way. We rented one that is now not available but there are loads on Booking.com

Jungfraujoch · 14/12/2022 09:05

Thank you for suggestions. Would ideally prefer Hotel to apartment as staying in Airbnb for a couple of days about 3 hrs away from Reykjavik at the start of our trip.

Apples - the details of those 2 hotels would be great thank you.

Sandhotel I’ve come across but will take another look.

There's a chain and they've got lots of hotels all of which have good reviews. Center hotels I think. Ours had a fantastic breakfast which helps given the price of everything else! It's such a great place.

OldTinHat · 14/12/2022 10:01

I stayed in Hotel Fron, slap bang in the centre. It was lovely, very clean and comfortable. Not sure about parking though, you'd have to find out.

OldTinHat · 14/12/2022 10:02

Actually, the website says they do have parking.

We stayed in one of the centre hotels ones. I agree that the included breakfast was a big advantage, given you need to remortgage to buy dinner. 🤣

We stayed at 22 Hill Hotel because they were one of the only ones who provided breakfast, which is (or was a few years ago) a rarity in Reykjavik. I think they also provide parking spaces but we didn't have a car so don't quote me on that. Nice and central, comfy rooms and plenty of free hot drinks.

roundthehorn · 14/12/2022 10:32

I stayed at the Skuggi hotel in 2019. 3* hotel with a great breakfast, parking, and a good central location.
The rooms are minimalist but clean and cosy, I wouldn’t hesitate to recommend it.

FluffyFlower · 14/12/2022 10:45

Exeter Hotel and Center Hotel on the main street. The breakfasts were good and rooms are clean. I recommend staying central as it is easier for restaurants and shops etc. Stayed in an apartment once too, also a good value if you want to cook occasionally.

Jungfraujoch · 14/12/2022 10:58

Thank you all! Lots to look at and I’ll let you know where we end up! Xx

We're going soon and we're staying in the Eyja Guldsmeden. We were recommended this hotel by a friend x

Another fan of Sandhotel, although they don't have parking as they're in the pedestrianised part. They do the most fabulous breakfast (bread and pastries supplied by the amazing Sandholt bakery next door - the rye bread is more addictive than crack) and their beds are SO comfy. I wouldn't stay anywhere else, they're that good.

Another vote for the Skuggi - super central location and very good breakfast. Quite a trendy hotel too, rooms were lovely and I remember snuggling up under a lovely Icelandic wool blanket in the room and now regret not buying one while I was there!
If you haven't been before, have a great trip, it's such an incredible place. (Make sure you get a hotdog and a coke from Bæjarins Beztu Pylsur down on the seafront, they're so good and it's a Reykjavik institution!)

TizerorFizz · 14/12/2022 19:15

Reykjavik marina m: Berjaya Iceland hotel. Was branded Icelandair in 2021 when we went. Its clean, well positioned for harbour and restaurants. The rooms are not design classics but comfy Icelandic. It has parking.

Glad to hear that the Skuggi Hotel is good. I've booked to stay there in January based on a reasonable price and the fact I like the name!

EwwSprouts · 14/12/2022 19:26

We stayed here in September. It's at the end of the pedestrianised main street and we walked everywhere. Friendly staff, very clean and a good breakfast was included. There was an adjacent car park which I assume belongs to it. If you stay there the restaurant directly opposite does fabulous lamb. www.centerhotels.com/en/hotel-midgardur-reykjavik

We never made our holiday to Iceland due to Covid, but I can confirm that the customer service at the Exeter Hotel (where we were due to stay) was exceptional. They really went above and beyond for us.

RhubarbFairy · 14/12/2022 19:37

We stayed at the Radisson Blu 1919.

Can't comment on the parking as we didn't need it, but you couldn't ask to be much more centrally located. Our room overlooked the famous hot dog stand and was about a 2 minute walk from the main streets of Reykjavik, leading up to Hallgrimskirkja Church, and The Harpa was easily accessed too (well worth a look to make you feel as tiny as an ant).

Fairly reasonable from what I remember too. No more than you'd pay in London.

Aha, there's the hot dog place I mentioned.

I did buy an Icelandic wool blanket from Rammagerdin on the main street. Best £100 I ever spent (incredible value) and I spend many hours snuggled under it.

Definitely get one!

Catslovepies · 14/12/2022 19:41

I was there a couple of weeks ago and stayed at the Eyja Guldsmeden. It was reasonably central and very lovely. Don't know about parking, though.

Jungfraujoch · 14/12/2022 19:56

Well after going through all the recommendations we’ve booked the Grandi Center! Parking around nearby streets doesn’t seem to be a problem so fingers crossed! Now to start planning our drive around the Golden Circle! Thank you all again! X
