Denmark

Has anyone combined a trip to Denmark with Legoland and Lego House in Billund? Just trying to work out if it is doable or whether it is better to do two separate trips.

Do you mean Copenhagen rather than Denmark. We did 40 years ago when I was a child but you could get the ferry to Denmark back then so we crossed had a day at Legoland then drove to lodge just outside Copenhagen for a week. I have plans to do similar with my son next year including and over by ferry back via the bridge (or vice versa) with DS next year.

@OttersMayHaveShiftedInTransit Oh yes I do! Brain fart there!!

The drive from Billund to Copenhagen takes less than half a day (even nearly 40 years ago when there were ferries rather bridges between the islands) or there is an excellent train service so it is really easy to incorporate both locations in a single trip.

Denmark is fairly small. If you fly to Copenhagen you can easily hire a car to get to Legoland and back.

If you want to drive yourself you can take a ferry to Hook of Holland or similar and then drive up through Germany into Sjaelland to visit Legoland and then on to Copenhagen.

I spent every summer as a kid in Denmark for 2-3 weeks. North sea beaches are cold but usually very empty and there's lots of other nice places to visit than just Copenhagen and Legoland on the way between the two.

Food is appalling at legoland. Take your own, seriously. It really is Lego chips….like the old “Hate School Dinners” song 😂

Aarhus is nice. Also Tollund Man - the most moving museum I’ve ever been to - can’t remember where that is

There's a recent Legoland thread here >> www.mumsnet.com/talk/holidays/4525465-Lego-land-Denmark-Lalandia-Billund?page=2&reply=121281959

The nearest airport to Legoland is Billund - you can literally walk from one to the other. Billund has flights from many UK regional airports. Alternatively Aarhus airport if you want to combine Legoland and Lego House with Aarhus and eastern Jutland. There is a new route from Humberside Airport to Esbjerg Airport, which is also only 40 mins. from Legoland.

While it is perfectly possible to combine Legoland/Lego House with Copenhagen, this will take 3 days out of your trip (travel plus enough time in each attraction) and there is more than enough within an hour or so of Billund to fill a whole week. Hire a car and you can easily reach Aarhus, Vejle, Kolding or Ebeltoft on the eastern side of Jutland, or go in the other direction to the Jutland west coast, where there are miles of empty beaches and cosy summerhouse cottages to rent. Tollund Man is in the museum at Silkeborg which is the main town in the Danish lake district, just 30 mins from Billund. (There is also a bog body in Moesgaard Museum in Aarhus). Paddle steamer trips leave from opposite the museum and either do sightseeing round trips or a trip to Himmelbjerget, one of the highest points in central Denmark with a great view over the lakes. Silkeborg also has the AQUA aquarium and animal park.

There is really lots to see in the different areas of Denmark. Jutland alone has more than enough for a week, and a one-week itinerary could also easily be made for Copenhagen/Zealand (and also include Malmo and Lund just across the bridge in Sweden).

We did Copenhagen and Billund earlier this year. Simple drive from CPH to Billund. Lego House is worth two days. Legoland is just another them park with Lego branding so I wouldn't bother again. I think we were away 6 nights in total and Copenhagen is wonderful. You must spend a day at the Experimentarium if you visit.

Thanks so much everyone for all your really helpful advice. I just looked at Danish school holidays and can see they are back in in August so pricing up going then.

We regularly visit Denmark in the first half of August. The Danish schools usually start their autumn term around 8th August, so the attractions are less busy and the accommodation less expensive than in July.
