What are the Canary Islands Really like in Jan/Feb?

DH fancied getting some winter sun and wants to book one of the Canary Islands for the end of January/early February.

Whilst I love a holiday I can't bear the thought of being somewhere that's supposed to be warm and being cold and miserable, I'd rather go somewhere cold and be cosy and warm.

If we went jan/Feb would we be able to sunbathe, swim in the sea/pool etc or would the weather be more like a mild spring in the Uk?

I have family who have a week in Tenerife every January. They always say it’s plenty warm enough, not hot. They never take cardigans/jumpers/jeans

Ummm I went end October one year and you definitely needed a cardigan or similar in the evenings. It got quite chilly.

we've been a few times in feb. it can be a bit hit and miss. so most of the time it has been sunny - shorts/tshirt weather. sometimes swimming costume and too hot, other times need to get out of the wind to get a sun trap. its usually pretty windy - but its windy a lot of the year. had a couple of days of drizzle/heavy rain (over probably 4 weeks of holiday)

you need a heated swimming pool if you want to swim.

We love it - nothing better than getting off the plane in loads of coats and being super hot and having to strip off.

evenings colder maybe fleece or even a coat

Can depend on where you go. Lanzarote and Fuerteventura much windier than Gran Canaria and Tenerife. Likewise north or south of an island can make a big difference in rainfall

As a rule, sea is cooler in Jan/Feb, choose somewhere with a heated pool.

We’ve had floods and torrential rain - and also 29 degrees. Def need a light sweater in the evenings.

But we go every year and never regret it.

Been in January before was about 20c. Did have a couple of cloudy days, cooler evenings.
Dress as you would late spring, early summer so Tshirt and a jacket or cardigan, but I wouldn't say beach weather personally as I like it a little warmer. You could still sunbathe though the sea might be cooler.

Also this was gran canaria which is less windy.

Can I jump on this asking for March experiences please? Looking for a weekend in the canaries towards the end of March, just me and DP, no children, but wondering what temps we can expect. I've been in April bwfore, and I was in GC last April and we had a heatwave so temperatures his 33°! Just wondering about March really!

I'm in Tenerife now
It's not really warm enough to use the pool
More like early May weather
But bide to be somewhere warmer than UK

Mostly OAPs out here and all wearing trousers t shirts and summer cardigans

I don't feel the cold so wearing usual summer gear

Madeira might be a good alternative. It’ll be mid teens temperature in Jan/Feb. It’s not really a beach destination as such, more rock pools to swim in but it’ll be too cold and a bit rough at that time of the year, in fact they’re likely closed. You might find a heated hotel pool. It’s so lush and green though, such a contrast to our winter.

For guaranteed winter sun you need to go further afield - Middle East, North Africa or central/South America

handbagsandholidays · 06/12/2022 22:07

I found the water temperature too cold but the air temperature was good!

shivawn · 07/12/2022 10:57

The sea around the Canaries would be too cold for me to swim in in the middle of summer! Average sea temp in February is 18° which will be freezing! Even in August it only goes up to around 22°.

Apparently 26° is considered a comfortable swimming temp for most people but I need 28° minimum which you rarely get in Europe at any time of year. If you really want good weather and warm water temperatures in February then you could look at someplace like Thailand or Kenya.

If you want to stick with the Canaries then there's loads of Airbnb's with heated pools, we booked a lovely villa with a big private pool that was heated to 30° in Lanzarote last April for around €115 a night.
