… that isn’t too expensive to eat out in and do things. Interested to hear experiences in winter and spring.

Naples!
A marmite destination but great food, reasonable prices, cheap flights..
You are also a stones throw from Pompei and the Amalie Coast.

GrimDamnFanjo · 06/12/2022 08:37

We've been 3 times in January, just booked for a fourth trip.
Have also been to Venice a couple of times in the Winter, Lisbon and Paris.

Enko · 06/12/2022 08:37

Paris
Copenhagen
Göteborg
London

Expensive depends on how you go about food.

Fivemoreminutes1 · 06/12/2022 13:37

Copenhagen, Paris and London are all fairly £££

We found Berlin, Barcelona and Budapest a lot more reasonable.

lunathestral · 06/12/2022 13:42

Florence beautiful but a little pricey
Amsterdam - lovely fun city with very cheap options for eating & entertainment

Depends what you want from a city really, everything outside of the UK will be a little pricey to eat out etc because of the £ to Euro rate

babbi · 06/12/2022 13:54

Copenhagen for sure .. brilliant in the winter !

TokyoSushi · 06/12/2022 13:55

Edinburgh, Amsterdam & Valencia, all lovely!

Amsterdam

TreesAtSea · 06/12/2022 17:17

Another vote for Amsterdam. Amazing city at any time of year and plenty to see and do whatever you're interested in. They have an Amsterdam Light Festival which is on until late January. If going in mid March to mid May, there's also the chance of visiting the beautiful Keukenhof Gardens (direct travel available from Amsterdam).

GettingStuffed · 06/12/2022 18:35

Prague
Krakow
Tallinn

All reasonably cheap by British standards

TwoBlondes · 06/12/2022 18:45

Porto. Very reasonably priced, excellent food. I went alone and felt very safe. Great shops.

midsomermurderess · 06/12/2022 21:25

I like Lyon. Great food, a good city for wandering. It’ll be a bit chilly still in Spring.

emmathedilemma · 07/12/2022 12:52

Budapest was quite reasonable. We went in October and had lovely weather.

LostDaydream · 08/12/2022 15:09

Thank you so much everyone! Lots of good suggestions here. It will be a tricky decision! I want somewhere with lots of architecture, lots of art and culture.

Amsterdam is great for art and architecture. Rome def amazing architecture, we also loved Seville, Lisbon, Copenhagen and Bologna.
we’re off to Krakow and Dubrovnik next year so will let you know what we think of those too!
i’ve heard great things about Porto too.

RhubarbFairy · 11/12/2022 11:26

We went to Riga in April and loved it.

Serenitesanta · 13/12/2022 23:13

Stockholm is amazing. Easy to get an air b&b or hotel and the transportation system is brilliant. Everyone speaks English. Very child friendly. Feels safe. Interesting place. We were expecting it to be mega expensive to eat out - it could’ve been - but there’s restaurants of all varieties. Brilliant shopping, museums, street culture, old town, carnivals there is so much to do. We’ve been winter, it’s freezing and magical and in summer when it’s blazing hot and I’d go again in a heartbeat. All of Sweden is very special.

Prague

sjpkgp1 · 14/12/2022 00:37

I absolutely love Eastern Europe, but the winters can be VERY cold. My suggestions are on the cheaper front, but with lots of culture / architecture.
Budapest. Can't do any wrong in my eyes. Best when a bit warmer tho.
Krakow ( I also like Poznan, Warsaw and Gdansk - but SO cold then)
Seville (great also not so cold - you can go in free to the Alcazar on some days, went in Feb and it was lovely and warm). Not that cheap but equally, not UK prices.
Rome (in winter or spring, but not so cheap, don't ever contemplate it in the summer, bloody unbearable)
Lisbon, just a nice place to be, not sure about winter tho. UK prices.
Madrid is too big, Porto is too small in winter, Prague is too touristy, I love Riga, but can imagine just how cold it would be in Feb
There is something around the Bergamo, Verona, Padua (and the spas near Abano Terme), Venice route that is attractive at that time of year because they are quieter, trains cost next to to nothing but the hotels are not cheap.
Good luck and happy travelling xx

Ditto

Barcelona for unique architecture - Antoni Gaudi
Rome - amazing ruins. We stayed in Trastevere, the heart of the buzzing old town full of lively eateries, pubs, bars, musicians and beautiful young people.
