Newark to 5th Avenue

I am flying into Newark airport and need to get to our hotel on 5th avenue. I have googled and my head is spinning. There is 4 of us, 2 adults, child and a granny, 4 large suitcases and probably 2 smaller cabin sizes. Anyone I have spoken to says the shuttles and trains are cheaper options, but can anyone help me with taxis, ubers whatever.
Has anyone done the journey recently that can talk me through it in baby steps. First ever trip to USA and I can feel the stress levels rising already

We jumped in a taxi straight out of the airport. I can't remember the cost but it was fair and nice and straightforward

The only time I have flown into EWR I took the train to Penn Station & then a taxi to my hotel. I would imagine for 4 passengers plus luggage you will be more cost effective to get a taxi or a private car service. Taxis can be picked up outside the terminal - don’t accept any offers from randoms inside the airport!

I have used Carmel Limos before & had no issues. You could google them & get a quote for your dates/times?

I will say that Ubers in NYC are I resubmit expensive. Id try and do it by transport, plug your details into Google maps and see what they suggest.

I travelled from JFK to central Manhattan via 2 trains and subways and it was fine

Definitely a taxi. Yellow cab just outside the airport. There are cab dispatchers by the rank. You will feel like a movie star! There are just too many of you to be messing about with trains (I have done the train and taxi’s

I meant to say 'ridiculously' expensive

What Chippy wrote.

Would not mess around with trains and such like given the amount of luggage you have. Also many subway stations in Manhattan itself have no lifts in them, it’s all stairs.

The yellow taxi dispatcher should get you into a taxi van, that’s the sort of vehicle you need.

When you get to the airport once you've grabbed your bags head towards uniformed transportation staff, they're normally either in smart outfits behind a customer care desk or in high visibility jackets by the "taxi rank" signs. The airport will be full of solicitors trying to get you into unlicensed cabs - ignore anyone who tries to get you help with your baggage inside the terminal, all licensed drivers will be outside in their cabs in the taxi rank.

There's a set fare system (of tolls / surcharges / fares) for the NYC cabs. There will be a queue of them outside and one of the transport workers will manage the queue and direct you to your cab that will fit you and your luggage, just let them know how big your group is when you join the queue. They're super polite and helpful and will probably help to load the bags.

If you go onto the Newark airport website there's a fare list of the standard fares to certain areas + the surcharges they might apply (tolls etc) 😊 tips are on top and if they've helped to load your bags and unload then anything between 15-20% can be added on. All of the NYC yellow taxis I have been in have card machines too!

They're so so used to tourists travelling it's a really smooth easy to use system and you'll fly through. Enjoy!

Thank you all, looks like a taxi will be the way we travel. My son will love the yellow cabs as he's seen them in the movies. So excited as he doesn't even know we are going yet.
