Child-free holiday in Europe - recommendations

medb22 · 21/11/2022 17:27

My parents have offered to take our two kids in the summer holidays so that we can have a short holiday for our big anniversary. I would love to hear any recommendations you might have for a grown-up holiday in Europe in the summer. Budget is around 3K, and our 'shopping list' is:

  • preferably not more than 3 hour flight time from UK
  • relatively high-end/boutique type hotel, though within reason obviously - White Lotus style is way beyond our reach!
  • Not all-inclusive
  • near the sea, but don't care too much about a beach - swimming pool would be better
  • small-ish town/village feel, not madly touristy (though I appreciate that we are tourists - I guess I just mean not a 'strip' type resort?)
  • nice restaurants where we can sit and people watch over good food and wine, preferably in pedestrianised squares with fairy lights strung up

We are less keen on a city break, though a small city maybe - I think I would feel a bit under pressure to sightsee in a city, and I kind of just want to relax and read by a pool with nice scenery as much as possible. A less-touristed Greek island would be my dream destination, but I don't think we can do the 4+ hours to Athens plus ferry journey - we only have 5 days, and also kind of want to be somewhere we can relatively easily return from, just in case. Does anyone have any recommendations that might fit the bill?

Porto!

medb22 · 21/11/2022 18:36

Thanks Y7drama. I've actually been to Porto before, but it was probably 20 years ago - I do remember it being gorgeous. And very good wine - yes, I remember that. I've had a look and there is the same issue I've found with most city break destinations, in that the hotels don't tend to have 'lounging around pools', iykwim. They are hotels with pools, but they all seem to be really small, kind of cocktail-bar sit-around types, rather than rock up for a few hours with a book type.

I think on balance though we are going to have to decide between city break and resort, given the limitations we are putting on it. Gah.

bluekotorbay.com

This fits your criteria I think. You'd have to visit Kotor for your picturesque square.

Hotel Es Moli Deia in Mallorca

MissAmbrosia · 21/11/2022 19:22

www.hotelvisavis.com/en/ Fly to Pisa or Genoa. Cinque Terre and Portofino easily accessible.

www.hlapalma.it/en/sky-bar/ Fly to Milan. Stunning scenery and boat trips.

MissAmbrosia · 21/11/2022 19:23

PS Sestri Levante and Stresa are both pretty towns with lots of restaurants. Sestri has beaches.

medb22 · 21/11/2022 19:45

@ItsReallyOnlyMe The setting of that hotel is GORGEOUS, but I think too isolated? I'd like to be able to walk into a town, rather than have to get cabs/drive.

@Fivemoreminutes1 Oh goodness, that is a beautiful town! Had never even heard of it! It's going on my list of potentials.

@MissAmbrosia That Stresa hotel is lovely (the pool!) and the town looks really nice. Definitely on my list - thanks!

Thanks everyone!

Villefranche sur Mer on the French Riviera. Like a posh French version of the Isle of Wight Very very pretty set in a stunning bay.. Nice beach ( tiny stones as opposed to pebbles in Nice) and sea to swim in. Good restaurants and small bars.
Train goes all the way through from Cannes to Italy. It’s 3 stops from Nice airport ( about 10 miles).
Hotel Welcome is the best location but plenty of fabulous apartments along the front.

Madeira. Stay in Funchal. Cannot recommended highly enough. Lovely hotel is Baia Azul but if you are pushing the boat out, the Savoy Palace.

Sicily! Palermo and Cefalù

AllIwantforChristmas22 · 21/11/2022 20:50

Stay at www.roccofortehotels.com/hotels-and-resorts/villa-igiea/

LovelyBitOfSquirrel69 · 21/11/2022 20:50

Sorrento - amazing food, wine & scenery.

AllIwantforChristmas22 · 21/11/2022 20:53

Or for Cefalu stay at lecalette.it/en/

you can also do 3 days Palermo and 2 Cefalu (it’s a 1 hour train ride). Both beautiful towns with historic centres, sea views and beaches and fantastic food. 3 hour flight from London to Palermo. But can be very hot in the summer!

Seville ❤️

berksandbeyond · 21/11/2022 21:40

I would go to Lake Bled, absolutely stunning. No sea though, but the lake is beautiful

Vanillalime · 21/11/2022 23:18

Grand Hotel Tremezzo on Lake Como. Stunning hotel & gorgeous location. You can fly into Milan.

BookwormButNoTime · 22/11/2022 06:30

Capri or the Amalfi Coast

MissAmbrosia · 22/11/2022 19:55

Ischia is much nicer than Capri. Certainly cheaper. www.ischiainsider.com/en/s/ischia-porto

marbeth · 22/11/2022 19:57

The Cliff Bay in Maderia.

CourtneeLuv · 22/11/2022 20:15

The parador, javea.

Hbh17 · 22/11/2022 20:25

Grand Hotel Tremezzo is lovely, but pricey.
Also recommended Hotel Monte Mulini in Rovinj, Croatia (fly into Pula).

midsomermurderess · 22/11/2022 21:00

I’d recommend Madeira too.

Thanks everyone for these brilliant suggestions, which have kept me joyfully away from my more tedious work this morning, and sent me off into a dream world of sitting by the sea with nice cheese. We will have to make a decision soon, as flights are EYE-WATERING and just going up, and I don't want to compromise by staying in a budget hotel (the hotel room is a big part of it for me).

Sorrento?
