Only when we were kids, with self-employed parents. We spent 6 lovely weeks every year at dads beach shack, and in fact every other holiday.

Do you have a tent? You could do a camping trip, say over the 6weeks, move to 3-4 different campsites, with enough around each site, to keep you busy for 1-2 weeks.
eg, beach/lake/mountains, vineyards, wandering around lovely villages, archit/historical/museum things. You could do that anywhere in Europe really.

A few years ago we spent 5 weeks - whole of August - on holiday in Austria in mountians. DH commuted from there to important meetings or worked from house. Kids went to Steiner holiday kindergarten in mornings and we hiked or swam in afternoons. Was great.

We spent last summer in the Caribbean- 1 week at family house in Barbados, 2 weeks at St James, 2 weeks at Four Seasons Nevis and last week back at family house in Barbados. Tbh, I wouldn't do it again - I could have asily done without that last week, and travelling around/repacking was a faff. And I had to do a ridiculous amount of preparation - pay all bills in advance, arrange for post to be Keptsafe, garden to be watered, house kept an eye on. I also think dd (in Yr1 now) missed out as she didn't get to see any of her friends over the holidays - we actually had a ridiculous conversation which ended with me shouting "no you can't go to tennis camp in the village hall, you're going to bloody Barbados"

bossykate · 30/01/2008 18:38

thanks to all for these messages

actually, having thought about it a bit more, i really don't want to be travelling round, i would like to be somewhere that is interesting enough to stay at for a few weeks...

Hmm - might I suggest ........ South London? Handy for all sorts of free attractions, no language barrier, free accommodation, potential for playschemes to dump kids in (because by the summer holidays you'll be totally fed up with the whole SAHM thing) and no language/food issues.

bossykate · 30/01/2008 18:47

are you being sarcastic?

i think i have exhausted the numerous attractions of our fine capital

actually, this morning's idea was:

  • 2 wks holiday somewhere - two options cornwall or malaysia. yes i know that sounds a little bizarre.
  • 2 wks back home.
  • 2 wks in languedoc already booked before i decided to jack it in temporarily
  • 1 addtional week in france somewhere

and bingo back to school!

LOL - last year DH was offered a bargain house to buy in Sweden - lakeside, in a forest lots for the DSs to do, as I work term-time only he thought it would be great for us (eg me and the DC ) to spend whole summers playing Swallows and Amazons.
Since he did not plan to come, except for a week at beginning and end, assumed he must have a mistress in the frame (like those french guys who pack the families out of paris in the summers )
In a way I quite like the idea, but actually the Dc would miss their friends, I speak no Swedish so would have to take a lumberjack lover to pass my evenings - might be good grist for my novel but decided not the best ever idea...

MrsGuyOfGisbourne · 30/01/2008 19:04

Plan this year is:
2 weeks in France (we cheat, by leaving school before the end of term )
Week @ home in London (last year DS1 @ cub camp)
Week DC @ PGL
Week including a three/four days mid-week camping in Dorset
Week @ home - local tennis/football camp etc
Week in Cornwall

Prufrock · 30/01/2008 19:09

Yes he was - he managed to get 6 weeks off by threatening to leave if not. Will yours be with you.
I think 2 weeks off, 2 weeks at home, 2 weeks off then one week back at home would be best - there's lots to oragnise before going back to school and I think young kids need a bit of normality - dd was super knackered the first week back - gettikng over the jetlag/travelling and coping with new class/having to work again. And unless you do have childcare booked it's going to be knackering for you as well. I know you are looking forward to spending 7 days a week with them, but the novelty does wear off., especially when they aren't going to school for a part of the day - holidays without childacre for SAHP's are simply a change of location.

nappyaddict · 30/01/2008 23:10

i know someone else who is doing italy this year. they are flying out and hiring a car at a cost of about 100 pound a week so it isn't a cheap option.

when i was at school i had a friend who's family got the ferry to northern spain and travelled around there for the 6 weeks holiday so it is doable but you have to consider the cost of petrol etc aswell.
