Four month old travelling to NZ - which lightweight buggy to fly with?

Hi - my dd will be 4 and a half months old when we fly to NZ. I want to buy a lightweight stroller that we'll be able to use in airports i.e small enough to get folded up in the cabin. But many of the lightweight buggies seem to be for 6 months and upwards. Will I do dd any harm if she goes in one early - or can anyone recommend a lightweight, aircraft-friendly one that works for a four month old.
Many Thanks!

we've used a luna before but we've always had it taken off us at the plane door and given back to us when we got off the plane so don't know if it fits in the overhead locker. it fits in a mini though.

PoppyField · 30/01/2008 20:12

Oh yes - I do mean the sort that they take off you at the plane door. I just want to make sure it's not one they make you check-in as baggage. I won't be so attached to it that I want to take it to my seat! Thanks for the suggestion nappyaddict, I'll check it out. Poppy

I think the idea of a stroller being from 6 months old is because up until that age, their backs are not strong enough to be kept upright for a long period. Although airlines specify that they only allow strollers, depending on the airlines, I have seen people go to the aircraft with pushchairs, and it is still allowed up to the aircraft. The only hassle you may have will be having to fold it to go through security but all pushchairs generally can be folded so long as you don't put stuff underneath it which will be more hassle when it comes to folding. Or maybe you could get a sling. Think comfort I say.

depending on the airline and how full it is sometimes they'll even let you take it on as cabin baggage

anyway, isn't there a QUinny something or other that folds up really small? other than that, a Maclaren XT or volo, very useful and quite indestructible

and yes take a sling too - very handy

MrsJohnCusack · 30/01/2008 23:21

right yes, quinny zapp, that's the one - 6 months on but from birth with a car seat

but a maclaren will go from birth, and they are great prams

where are you going in NZ?

Pannacotta · 30/01/2008 23:22

Maclaren XT/CLassic etc, these are ok for that age, comfy and fold up easily too.
We took out Techno Classic onholiday this autumn for DS2 who was 4 months and it was fine.

Great - will look into the Maclaren as well. Well, Mrs John Nosy Cusack - we're going just because we can! DH works short contracts and we need a holiday. We got married in 2000 at Matheson's Bay (ahh) do you know it? And we've got some great friends there and, er, what other reasons - how about wine, warmth, bulk-buying merino vests (yay). Am trying to be optimistic about the journey for my dd, people do say to go now before they do complicated things like crawling and walking so I'm thinking it's now or never or at least not for a long time hence. Also, we are silly, anxious first-time old parents - who knows, if we manage this we'll be totally laid-back when we get home. Er, right.

WHERE not WHY - I'm not that nosy!

but I enjoyed reading why anyway
just wondered if you were coming to the South Island

this is a brilliant time to travel, honestly, it'll be easy peasy

We use Quiiny Zapp and when DD was little used it with the maxi cosy car seat - that meant having a car seat at the other end and no need to hire one. We travel loads and are very happy with our quinny.

PoppyField · 01/02/2008 22:31

Ooh sorry Mrs Cusack, my old eyes deceived me! Haven't got southerly plans yet, but am thinking we might venture that way in our middle week - maybe Queenstown, or I've always wanted to look for whales and dolphins. Any thoughts?
Also, KT12, that's a good idea - we've got the car seat already, will look at Quinnys.

whales and dolphins - Kaikoura - but you have to book in advance

or you can see stacks of dolphins in Akaroa (nr Christchurch)

Queenstown and surrounds are fab
