French Polynesia

Has anyone been to French Polynesia?

We've spotted some flights for £900 and are now interested in going there. I have always dreamt of going to Tahiti or Hawaii or somewhere like that, but have always thought it would be too expensive. I looked at accommodation, and found some quaint 'mom and pop' type guesthouses or airbnb for about £80 a night.

They are basic, but we want to go for the snorkelling and to take in some local culture, and explore.

We were thinking of going for two weeks. It is a heck of a long way for just two weeks though. Thinking of splitting our time up with two nights on Tahiti, 7 nights on Mo'orea and then 3 or 4 nights on one of the super undeveloped islands (but flights are pricy). We don't fancy Bora Bora as it looks too blingy (and expensive)

The biggest downside other than travel time, is we read that the cost of food is insane. I read about hotel buffets for breakfast costing £40.

Please could someone share their insights?

It's one of the most beautiful places we have ever been. We've been twice.

You don't need to stay in an overwater villa or stay in a 5* hotel. We find those awfully bland. You can stay with a local family in their guesthouse.

In terms of flights, we found Air Tahiti Nui to be the best, Air France are good too. We haven't heard great things about the low cost airline which goes there.
