ROI passport for infant?

My DH wants to visit ROI from England. We both have valid passports as does our 21 month old, however we have an 11 week old who does not currently have a passport. He wanted to go for new year and I am nor sure if we will be able to sort a passport in this time. I know you can travel to ROI from UK with valid ID instead of passport, but how would this work for a baby who obviously has no ID other than a birth certificate at present, does this mean they would need a passport? TIA

aer Lingus accept birth cert for infants, as does the ferry. Ryanair require passports for everyone, so depends on how you are planning to travel

I'm sure you can do a 1 week fast track for a 1st child passport

Aer Lingus used to accept the birth certificate for infants. Best check with them that they still do, but that might be the easiest option for you.
(ID as an option is only valid for travel if the passenger was born in either the UK, NI, or ROI, I’m assuming you fall under one of those)

That's great, thanks all for the advice. We were planning on the ferry so birth certificate should hopefully be OK but will check with them. Baby born in UK as am I. Whenever I have been in the past I have always just used passport anyway instead of driving licence or anything else.

The ferry accepts birth cert from uk-ROI and back because of Common Travel Area.
