Family of 3 (2 adults + 1 child) plus 1 smallish dog. Within 4-5 hoir drive of Newcastle upon Tyne. Already done and loved: Oban, Shropshire, Wales (most of it), Norfolk, North Yorks and Lakes (most of the Lakes).
Looking for quiet and peaceful area but near attractions eg National Trust, local/historical significance. Needs to be an area with access to lots of outdoor activities that we can enjoy with the dog and good places to eat.
Budget around 1.5K for the accommodation which must have enclosed garden and near pub + place to eat.
Any suggestions?

Derbyshire / Peak District, maybe going into north Staffordshire.

Aviemore area would fit your bill, maybe stay somewhere like Nethy Bridge if you want it a little quieter.

How about Arran? We stayed at Auchrannie resort which would probably be out of your budget, but I bet there are places which would fit your requirements

Peak District or Yorkshire Dales.

Somewhere near Callander would be good. I would recommend Forest Holidays at Strathyre but in summertime they will be well outside budget, but see if you can find any rentals in the area.

Or Scottish borders, Melrose is lovely and you could easily spend a week working round the other little towns and walks.

ooh yes Callander is lovely! Round Crieff too is a lot less touristy than parts of the highlands and islands.

Great suggestions thank you. For those suggesting Scotland would the midges have gone by August?

Mull of Galloway. Beaches, stately homes, forest & dark skies, good seafood. We went end of August and midges pretty much gone.

Midges tend to be worst around water, inland isn’t so bad but I’d probably avoid the west coast.
