Rome & Amalfi Coast Recommendations

hi, looking to do a twin centre type holiday next summer. Fly to Rome - couple of days there, train to Naples and then Amalfi Coast / Sorrento. Any recommendations for hotels / airbnb / itinerary ideas, best to stay in one place, base at Sorrento? Would like to go to Positano / Ravello / Sorrento / Capri / Pompeii. thanks

Can't help with accommodation as we went there on a cruise but we did a guided tour of Pompeii and it was fantastic but if we go back I'd like to visit Herculaneum en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Herculaneum as apparently it even better than Pompeii.

thanks that sounds good!

We loved Amalfi Coast. We did most of the towns along the coast. We stayed in Amalfi which we highly recommend and then did day trips from there. If you do go to Amalfi there is a little ice cream shop in the town square called Andrea Pansa and it is literally the best ice cream I've had in my life - and I've had a lot of ice cream Grin

Capri was lovely but take a lot of cash as not cheap at all.

Loved Pompeii! Absolutely amazing. Haven't been to Rome yet so no recommendations for there

thank you, debating whether to make base at Amalfi or Sorrento!

I would definitely base yourself in Amalfi!

We stayed in Trastevere in Rome, great area for the restaurants and bars

Didn’t get to Amalfi but didn’t like Sorrento- can’t see what all the fuss is about tbh. Very busy and crowded (but it was the height of the season) with not much to do and no beach just the lido.
Pompeii was great, depends on what time of year you go as to how bearable the heat will be. We went in August and went as early as possible but eventually the heat got far too much and we had to leave without seeing nearly as much as we wanted. And it was so busy by the time we left.
The Italian trains are excellent, very easy to navigate but word of warning you do need to prebook your seats as you need a seat with the booking.

Stayed in Amalfi and it was a great base. Make sure you do the Path Of The Gods walk! Bus to Bomerano (a very winding road!) then hike and drop down into Positano, boat back to Amalfi, great day.

did Ravello from Amalfi too.

then we stayed a couple of night nearer Sorrento and Day tripped Capri from there (one day was enough, really pricey) - on Capri the blue grotto is worth seeing and the chair lift is fun.

food amazing everywhere! Loved it. Enjoy. Pompeii great, but like previous poster said, Herculaneum supposed to be even better. Also walked up Vesuvius.

Amalfi the better base I think.

We have stayed at the Hotel Bristol in Sorrento on 3 occasions. A lovely hotel.

Hbh17 · 31/10/2022 18:16

That's an awful lot to pack into just a week - could you make it two?

Sorrento means that you can take the train to Vesuvius, Pompeii, Herculaneum, Naples. Sorrento is the end of the line.
There are buses from Sorrento round to the Amalfi.

Geamhradh · 31/10/2022 18:19

Stay anywhere on the Amalfi coast except Sorrento, it's become a dive and is very Brits abroad (live Arsenal matches, English/Irish pubs etc) despite being on a stunning coastline.
In Rome I'd recommend the area near the Vatican. Easily walking distance to the centre from there and it's very safe. Cheap to eat out almost everywhere in Rome. Sorrento/Amalfi coast will be more expensive.
Download the trenitalia app for your train tickets. Train travel is great in Italy, and in Rome public transport is good.

Cashelmara · 31/10/2022 18:27

We spent 3 days in Rome and then drove down to Amalfi where we stayed for 2 weeks. It's a good base for Ravello, Pompeii, Positano and Naples. Didn't like Sorrento much.

MadeForThis · 31/10/2022 18:32

We stayed in Trastavere in Rome and highly recommended. Great transport, amazing food and local markets and street performance.

We are currently planning the next trip to Italy. Would only be 3 nights. Would love the almalfi coast but doubt 3 nights is long enough.

ErrolTheDragon · 31/10/2022 18:32

Paestum is wonderful.

AnnaMagnani · 31/10/2022 18:36

Honestly think Rome, Naples AND Sorrento/Amalfi Coast is too much for 1 week.

You can easily do a week in any of those.

Georgyporky · 31/10/2022 18:38

I think you really need 4-5 days in Rome to make the most of it.
We had a separate holiday with Sorrento as a base, which was central for what we wanted to do.
IMO Capri is over-rated, & v. expensive to boot

Sofuckingtiredofthis · 31/10/2022 18:39

@MadeForThis trastevere is great. First ever try of cacio e pepe, life altering experience! Food and accommodation so much more reasonable here and it’s still no distance from the main sights 👍

Far too much.
At least a week for Rome , 10 days of a fortnight based somewhere like sorrento for the various archeological sites, maybe Vesuvius, Capri, the amalfi coast

AnnaMagnani · 31/10/2022 18:47

If you did Rome for a week, you could go to Ostia Antica for your ancient Romans (although Rome has masses of that already), or spend a weekend in Tivoli where the landscape around the gorge is stunning and the Villa d'Este is a must see experience.

Sofuckingtiredofthis · 31/10/2022 18:50

Also the catacombs in Rome are worth going off the beaten track for if you like that sort of thing (I do!). Fascinating.

charlie202 · 31/10/2022 18:54

Thanks for all your replies. Going with 19 year old son. Plan is Rome for few nights and then train to Naples but not staying there, heading on to Sorrento / amalfi. Maybe stay there for 5-6 nights and do day trips. Appreciate would be better to spend longer in both areas as so much to see, but I’ll take 8/9 days that he’ll spend with me and hopefully get a good bit of variety!
