Plane seats for air travel to Canada

PapaBob · 29/10/2022 17:39

My wife and I are taking our kids and grand kids to Canada for a skiing holiday next February. Our youngest grandchild will be 21 months old then.
We have booked him his own seat, but have found that he has to have a car seat-style chair to sit in for the journey.
Apparently these have to comply to North American standards for them to be allowed on the plane. There's a certain sticker or two they have to have which indicate compliance but it's proving difficult to nail down a specific seat that fulfils all criteria.
Has anybody had experience of this that can give me a specific seat make or model for travel to Canada that has definitely been accepted by an airline, specifically Air Canada if possible?
Thanks for any help you can give.
Bob

Perhaps ask the airline if they have the seats available for hire?

Spacejamming · 29/10/2022 17:44

What airline are you flying with? I’ve flown with Air Canada and West Jet with my then toddler and he just had his own seat and sat in it the whole way. From memory, over 2s need to be in their own seat and strapped in for landing but under 2s can sit on your lap, facing you with your holding them tight.

Spacejamming · 29/10/2022 17:45

Oh sorry I just saw you said Air Canada. I definitely did not fly with a car seat.

LIZS · 29/10/2022 17:47

It is usually only a requirement for take off and landing, otherwise they sit on parent's lap with a special seatbelt extension until the light has gone out then move to their own seat.

If you’re planning on using a car seat it should have a label displaying UN standard ECE R44-03 (revision 03) or a later revision, and a label displaying qualification for use in aircraft.

The details are in here. You need to scroll down the list:

Some people use a CARES harness but they have straps that fasten around the seat, which means the person behind can’t use their tray.

Where have you heard this? I flew air Canada long haul with DS at 19 months in his own seat. I definitely didn't need a car seat.

In Canada they have to be certified as evidenced by a sticker that has the number 213.1/213.2 on it. But it doesn't look like that's an option in the UK. I think you may run into issues if it's not a Canadian or American car seat.

StillNotWarm · 29/10/2022 18:05

Can the toddler sit on an adults knee when the seatbelt signs are on, and in their own seat, minus a carseat, for the rest of the time?

This is what we did with our undsr 2s long haul many years ago.

AriettyHomily · 29/10/2022 18:29

I don't think this is the case, they can use a car seat but don't have to.

Dreikanter · 29/10/2022 18:47

If a child under 2 has their own seat then they have to use a safety seat or restraint device when the seatbelt sign is on.

Approved restraint devices here:

Thank you to everybody for your feedback. We have already checked all of the Air Canada links mentioned in the thread thanks, but we are specifically asking for a brand name or model of seat that we can buy in the UK. We haven't been able to tie anything down so far. Any ideas?

Can you order the restraint type listed on Air Canada via Amazon.com for UK delivery?

PapaBob · 29/10/2022 23:28

Thanks for all of the time that you've spent on this Dreikanter.
We've seen that seat harness as well.
My daughter wants an actual safety seat so that her son has somewhere comfortable to sleep on a long haul flight.
Also, reading the thread that you supplied 'kidsflysafe', the concensus of the experts is that younger kids should be put into a proper child safety seat when travelling to cover take off, landing and turbulence.
I'm going to ring Air Canada to try to get some feedback on manufacturers of approved seats.
I appreciate the help from everyone.
If you do come across any brands that fit the criteria I'd love to hear from you.

AttilaTheMeerkat · 30/10/2022 19:47

How did you get on with Air Canada?.

The other issues here to consider is that the car seat may not actually fit the width or length of the aircraft seat thus rendering it useless. Carrying such an item through the airport to the departure gate and then onto the plane could also be difficult.

PapaBob · 30/10/2022 22:42

Thanks for asking.
I'll be calling Air Canada this week.
One of the reasons for asking if anybody has a make or model name for an approved seat is that it should fit in the plane seat, so it's on my list of queries.
There are 5 adults travelling so we will be fine with the luggage through the airport.
Thanks for your interest.

MooseBeTimeForSnow
Thanks so much for your link.
I think that's exactly what I've been looking for, I appreciate your help.

This is the first time for me on Mumsnet, and even though I'm not a Mum I'm so impressed that so many of you have taken the time and trouble to help me with this enquiry.
Thank you to everybody who made a contribution.
I can now close the thread.
