Frankfurt- there must be something to do?

I’ve been looking at reviews of Frankfurt on here and the overriding comment is don’t bother going (it seems to score highly on the “cities I have been disappointed with" thread…..).

My daughter (in sixth form) and husband are off to Frankfurt for 3 days next week. There’s got to be something to do there surely? Anyone got ideas of what they could do to make it vaguely interesting. This is her first trip away in about three years and I’m beginning to feel a bit concerned – she is way past wanting to go to a zoo or anything similar. Old chesnut tourist sites? Quirky restaurants or activities?

Thanks very much.

Apologies I know it looks like I had been drinking when I wrote this but I failed to spell check it properly.

Never been, but I usually look on tripadvisor on these oaccasions: www.tripadvisor.co.uk/Attractions-g187337-Activities-Frankfurt_Hesse.html

Thanks for the reply. Sorry I should have added that I have already looked at trip advisor and lonely planet before posting (hence comment about the zoo). Most of the suggestions that score well are to do a day trip somewhere else which is why I am seeking inside knowledge.

Get the train to Koblenz and back. It goes along the Rhine valley past all the famous castles and cliffs

There are some rather good museums in Frankfurt, if that’s something you could be interested in -but you’d have to check that a show is currently up and running. Not all of them have permanent collections.
The area along the river is quite nice as a place to hang out, I‘ve heard. There are festivals and so on in the summer, probably less so now.

We had a lovely time in Frankfurt. We love quirky museums eg the Postal Museum and there are quite a few of those. But it's also a lovely place just to enjoy strolling along the river, eating in nice restaurants and shopping.

It was DS1's favourite stop of our multi centre trip even though nominally we went to other more attraction-stuffed places too.

I love Frankfurt, we have friends there and it's a beautiful city.

Try one of the Apfelwein taverns for ridiculous portions of sausage, pork knuckle, schnitzel etc, with jugs of apple wine. They're good fun.

I like just walking around, there is great architecture and the riverside is lovely, or there are river boat tours.

This museum is excellent: www.staedelmuseum.de/de

While we were walking in the park, we discovered a family of beavers living here: goo.gl/maps/pqqJEkFKEmwyCe9R6

We were there 3 years ago and enjoyed it although we were staying with friends just outside the city.

We enjoyed the Natural History Museum and the Experiminta Science Museum but we had younger kids. Still great fun, though.

It's worth visiting the old town and the new old town where new buildings were built in the same dimensions as the buildings before it was bombed.

We enjoyed the zoo - in particular the nocturnal bit.

Finally, would recommend the Apfelwein Express tour - you get pretzels and cider/sparkling apple juice.

If your daughter likes shopping, there is a big shopping centre outside the city she might like.

There’s the boat tour on the Main which gives a good view of the skyline.
We took a guided walking tour which ended with a trip to the top of a skyscraper at sunset. Booked at the tourist info.
Museums are varied - natural history was a winner with my kids.
Great for shopping too and just generally wandering about, it’s not that big so fairly easy to navigate.

I spent lots of time in Frankfurt as my company's HQ is there and I personally am not a huge fan.
But you do have great museums.Otherwise you can take a train to Heidelberg, a nicer city to wander around for a day. There is a direct train or you need to change.
Restaurants - there is a huge variety of everything but if you want local cusine go to Sachsenhausen to the beergarden with Applewoi (very dry apple wine), sausages, schnitzel and more pork dishes.
Sachsenhausen is a nice part of Frankfurt to explore.

The Old Town ( teeny weeny) is lovely and there are some nice traditional.restaurants there.
