My best idea so far is Copenhagen
i would like to go somewhere that feels safe as it’s just the two of us. Easy to negotiate travel around etc. we will go for four nights and do a bit of sightseeing. I just wonder if Copenhagen isn’t that interesting/cool a destination. Just hoping for a few other ideas if anyone has.

Rome is a good option.

Bartg · 24/10/2022 20:38

I would love to do Rome. Is it easy to negotiate travelling around? I have been a long time ago and I remember it being very busy. I am also thinking about the fact ds will have to go in to public loos on his own. Perhaps we could manage this by using only those at restaurants and museums. I am a worrier and thinking through everything!

We’ve just returned from Oslo.
Very safe, lots to see, and very easy to get around.
It is however very expensive.
Prague is another favourite of ours and Lisbon.

Bartg · 24/10/2022 20:46

i wondered about oslo. Lots of museums and parks?

Copenhagen is fantastic. Very walkable, good public transport system (including subway from the airport) and lots of interesting sights.

Bartg · 24/10/2022 21:01

Ah that’s great to get a Good vote for Copenhagen

What time of year?

Copenhagen is a good option; what about Amsterdam or Berlin?

Bartg · 24/10/2022 21:08

Easter. Yes I did also think Amsterdam. Hadn’t considered Berlin. I have a feeling Amsterdam is more adult though?

To be = rome....

ghislaine · 24/10/2022 21:26

Reykjavik? Unlikely to be cheap but I would imagine it’s comparable with Oslo and Copenhagen.

Bartg · 24/10/2022 21:27

To be sleepwouldbenice? I am guessing that is autocorrect from rome?

Copenhagen is OK for a 3-4 day break - plenty to see and very easy and safe to get around.

The obvious destination in Denmark with a 13 year old is Billund, for Legoland and the fabulous Lego House. These would fill 2 days, so for the other days take day trips (or move on) to Aarhus and/or to Vejle/Kolding/Jelling. Public transport is reliable, clean and easy to use.

hopeishere · 24/10/2022 21:36

Stockholm- lots to see. Very safe.

goldfinchonthelawn · 24/10/2022 21:36

I once took DS to the Loire valley for a few days. Visited chateaux and Leonardo's house with the museum of all his inventions, had a balloon ride, saw wild boar, went cycling along the river, went to the market where he practised his French. He loved it. That was very easy to get to. Eurostar then train to Amboise.

Yika · 24/10/2022 21:43

There is plenty for kids and teens in Amsterdam. Science museum, Anne Frank house, get bikes and cycle right out of the city into the countryside, take a boat trip on the canals. I like the Netherlands, the people are friendly and it’s bursting at the seams with art and history.

cosmiccosmos · 24/10/2022 21:45

I would do Rome or Amsterdam. Copenhagen is v expensive and I don't think that interesting for a teenager.

Bartg · 24/10/2022 21:46

Thanks. Great ideas from you all

I'd second Amsterdam as a suggestion. The obviously adult parts of it are easily avoided and there really is so much to see and do. I have zero interest in anything remotely "edgy", yet had a great time. People there are incredibly friendly and welcoming and the atmosphere is great. Public transport is excellent and the city is also very walkable... just watch out for the bikes! It isn't cheap admittedly, but I don't think prices are quite as high as they'd be in Scandinavia.

Lanzarote.

A day in the volcano park (where Star Wars was filmed), including the cafe where you can get lunch cooked over the lava.

A day visiting the Jameos del Agua and the fantastic stalagmite cave walk at Cuevos del Verdes

The castle at Arrecife, hire bikes and ride over dirt tracks to the wild beaches at Papagyo, submarine trip from Puerto Calero, the fantastic Cesare Manrique architecture and sights, hang out in the promenade at Playa Blanca.

Very easy to arrange day trips and excursions , through First Minute and other companies.

Me and my 9 year old went to rome last Easter. We both loved it. Everywhere is walkable. Feels very safe. So many things to soak up.
