Rome - Ostia Antica

DH and I are planning a weekend in Rome. We've been before and have done the major sights, so were planning on going to Ostia Antica. For some reason though the guided tours on Viator etc are all really expensive.

Is it feasible to just look around without a guide? I know quite a lot about Roman life but wouldn't be able to know all the cool stuff that guides seem to come out with.

It's a while since I went but I seem to remember using a guide book I bought there, it was fairly basic but had numbered paragraphs relating to the numbers on buildings I think!

Yes, it's entirely doable without a guide. There are lots of notice boards with info on several languages. The size of the site is spectacular. We only saw about a quarter of it, will definitely go there again.

Yes! Definitely doable without a guide. I recommend reading a guide book though and going right down to the synagogue- amazing place!

We caught the train and used just the Blue Guide to Rome. It was fantastic.

It's easy-peasy. Take the Metro out there and the site explains itself, more or less. It is beautiful this time of year.
