AirBnB asking us to pay 3000 pounds 2 months after stay

AirBnb have asked us to pay for damages to the apartment we were staying in during summer in St Ives Cornwall. When we were there the host told us that there was a leak that was causing damage to apartment below. We cooperated and let plumber in and other staff in to inspect.

Then after the stay the host is claiming that we flooded the apartment and AirBnb is asking us to pay for damages.

We're at loss as to how we could be held responsible for the damage. Have appealed but would appreciate any advice.

How did the host know there was a leak during your stay? Was he in the property at the time? If not, then it sounds as if you may have been responsible for it.

maudesvagina · 19/10/2022 10:12

Do you have any correspondence from owner that would prove your point?

TightDiamondShoes · 19/10/2022 10:14

They’re fucking vampires. Don’t give them a penny. The fact they KNEW there was a leak and STILL let it out demonstrates they’re money-grabbing cunts. They can claim from their insurance.

CrampMcBastard · 19/10/2022 10:43

Well did you flood the apartment?

I assume the owner knew there was a leak because a downstairs neighbour notified them.

What was the conclusion of the plumber? What work did they do while you were there?

FleshLiabilities · 19/10/2022 10:46

Had the host told you what caused the leak?

Isaidnoalready · 19/10/2022 10:47

They should have insurance for this sort of thing

SummerHouse · 19/10/2022 10:50

To back this up they would need evidence. And what evidence would they have if you didn't do it.

Georgeskitchen · 19/10/2022 10:56

CFs. Tell them to shove it where the sun don't shine

SydneySage · 19/10/2022 11:11

er, I dont think so sunshine!!

show me proof that it was my fault??

This!!

Unless you ran the bath and went for a stroll, this is what insurance is for.

ClaudiaWankleman · 19/10/2022 11:15

Did you flood the place?

Even if you did, I’d have expected blame to be apportioned to you before the end of your stay, especially as you let staff and experts in.

pollina · 19/10/2022 11:41

Disgusting. Absolutely no way they will get away with this.
this is the problem with the AirBNBing of life. People buy these places and rent them out expecting make a fast turn and have the cash pouring in; they have no concept of the time and cost that being a professional landlord involves.
They are deeply unscrupulous people who
cant afford what they have taken on, and are seeking to pass onto you instead of insurance (they probably don’t have the correct insurance to AirBNB the house which is why they are looking to you).
Send a full and formal reply and this groundless accusation won’t stick.

Just to be on the safe side I would cancel / report the card you paid on as stolen/ lost so that you get a completely new card with a different number / 3 digit code exp date and remove any linked credit / debit cards from the air n b website

MavisChunch29 · 19/10/2022 11:49

Tell them to stuff it. If they would like to proceed against you, you'll see them in court. You definitely won't see them in court as there is no case to answer.

Sago1 · 19/10/2022 11:51

Do you have an email/text trail of any correspondence you had with the owners?
Did you have positive feedback from the owners after your stay.
Go to the listing and check on the feedback from guests after your stay.
Good luck.

girlmom21 · 19/10/2022 11:51

Ask them for their evidence, in writing, and ask them, also in writing, why they sent a plumber round to fix a leak on X date if they believed you'd flooded the apartment and only challenged you after your stay.

Babygirlnameq · 19/10/2022 11:51

Where was the leak coming from? A tap you left on? A bath that sloshed (a lot) over the sides? Showers with the door open?

If not, I can’t see how it would be your fault!

Also - £3000?!? Surely they have insurance!

Has this Airbnb’er got any other reviews?

Babygirlnameq · 19/10/2022 11:55

Also - one of my tenants sort of caused a flood in my flat (constantly letting the shower run out into the bathroom - a bathtub shower where she didn’t tuck the shower curtain in properly if that makes sense - over months and months) and didn’t tell me about it.

It was only when the downstairs neighbour told me about the water running into her flat and the hole in her ceiling that I knew anything was going on.

I had to rip out and replace all the flooring. I paid for it and claimed it back on my household insurance. The end.

TootMootZoot · 19/10/2022 12:01

Wow, that's a big bill. It's hard to say without more details.

orbitalcrisis · 19/10/2022 12:04

I wonder if their insurance company found out they were Airbnbing the place and withdrew their policy...

LovelyLovelyWarmCoffee · 19/10/2022 12:09

Something is not clear, did the leak happen before or during your stay?
If during your stay, what exactly was the cause? Water splashing from the bath or leak in plumbing for ex?

Meili04 · 19/10/2022 12:14

Cancel your cards now and order new ones. They won't be able to take the money then refute all allegations. Don't give them a penny greedy cfers.

eurochick · 19/10/2022 12:20

You haven't given us much to go on here. What was the source of the leak? What did the plumber say? Was the leak due to your carelessness?

Wiluli · 19/10/2022 12:27

Unless they can prove nobody was in the apartment since your stay ( and even then it’s not easy as the burden to prove it was you is on them ) then they haven’t got a leg to stand on . Reply exactly what you put here and tell them you are 100% sure you are not liable to any damages . If they take you to small claims court they cannot win
