Going to New York (wooohooo) at the beginning of April, have some ideas of things we want to do, come and tell me if there is anything I have missed! And some questions too.

Use the gold plated loos in Trump Tower!

CantSleepWontSleep · 27/01/2008 15:24

Have seen Beauty and the Beast, The Producers and Wicked on Broadway, and all are fantastic. Book early to avoid disappointment!

I always forget the name of the place I want to recommend to eat. Will see if I can find it somehow, but it's a place with a huge salad bar, and men walking around with loads of different cuts of meat, and you put your mat to green if you want them to bring you some, or red if you don't!

We went in November and it is fab!4 days is enough and I would really recommend the ferry trips and a day strolling around the lovely soho shops. We went to the cinem,a too which was great big comfy seats and huge popcorn.Central park is great you can ice skate there and there is a great atmosphere

Teuch · 27/01/2008 15:35

I'm so jealous

If you are like me, and want to ease yourself in gently to the NY 'feel', head up to the Metropolitan Museum, have a wander round that then walk back down via Fifth Avenue then cut across to Times Square...by the time you get back to your Hotel (tell me it ain't The Pennsylvania?!) you'll be strutting like a local, jaywalking AND eating a pretzel

Breakfast at...wait I forget...the hotel that does the famous breakfast (I'll remember). FAO Swartz and Toysrus Times Square (both toy shops). Get on the subway and go out in Greenwich Village one evening.

Obviously, get in a yellow cab, and hold on to your hats ...we giggled the whole time we were in them!!

Dundee is my home town!! ALmost as nice as NY but erm not quite

CantSleepWontSleep · 27/01/2008 15:43

We had the same dilemma re shows, so saw those two on consecutive days of the same trip .

Teuch · 27/01/2008 15:44

Also just clocked the seashell No sure where she'll be getting that from...

VanillaPumpkin · 27/01/2008 15:45

It is worth going up the Empire State building IMO and we also did one of those naff hop on hop off red bus tours which was actually excellent and great value for money with great guides. It included an evening ride out to view the Brooklyn bridge and Manhatten at night which was great fun.
The best thing for us was that everything was walkable. We set off in the morning to do our first days plan and had totally over estimated how long it would take to get to places. Grand Central station is worth popping into if you are passing. Very impressive and we liked visiting St Patricks cathedral too.
It is a fab city. I loved my time there and will be going back, and I don't even like shopping .
Oh the horse drawn sleigh ride was fun but a little bit of an anti-climax for us. I felt like a cliche and a bit self conscious IYKWIM. Worth doing once though and our guide was very funny.

TigerPants · 27/01/2008 15:47

The Natural History Museum is wonderful.

VanillaPumpkin · 27/01/2008 15:47

We saw the Lion King when we were there. Was excellent!

Teuch · 27/01/2008 15:49

Actually I would 2nd the horsey anticlimax...it was just smelly and took up far too much of our precious time.

Speaking of walkable, take a few different pairs of COMFORTABLE shoes...I cannot stress that enough!!! C-O-M-F-O-R-T-A-B-L-E!!! I wrecked my feet when I was there for a week as I only had 2 pairs; trainers and flat boots!! It is hard on the old feet, all that traipsing around

VanillaPumpkin · 27/01/2008 15:59

Yes it was too long.....
And the best food we had was our breakfasts. Every one a winner. Pancakes and bacon and maple syrup and great caaawfeeeee (ahem coffee).
Oh and the people serving are SOOOO rude it is hilarious.
Our evening meals were OK but the best one was in a massive burger type place in Time Square , oh and fabulous pizza dh has just reminded me.....

Oh yes, brilliant tip to the Empite state buliding - time it well. It was daylight when we got up there and nighttime before we left!!! Got the best of both bits . It was windy up there, but we went in January.

www.yankees.mlb.com is the website of the NY Yankees baseball team. Think there are some evening games the days you are there.
However, if you purchase tickets online you may have to use the Will Call box office at the stadium. You will have to present photo identification (like your passport or your UK photocard driving licence if you have such a thing) when collecting tickets.

If you have photo ID like a UK photocard driving licence take that with you when you go shopping. I suggest this as some stores also ask for photo id when payment is made with a credit card.

If you are planning on using a credit card during the holiday it is wise to inform the credit card company before departing the UK. They could stop your credit card otherwise!!.

Do each complete the green visa waiver form and white customs form given to you at check-in whilst on the plane - you do not want to do this whilst waiting in line at immigration. You will each be fingerprinted and photographed on arrival.

Would certainly wear comfy shoes - certainly not heels!!!. Trainers are ideal.

South Street Seaport is worth a visit as is the NYSE. If the Beast speedboat is running from the seaport do ride!!.

Time Out magazine should have good ideas re comedy clubs.

central park zoo is nice. yes i know you are adults but i still like that sort of thing!
i went with my mum in the november after september 11th. seems like a lifetime ago now.
we found ourselves walking around central park at 6 in the morning because we just couldnt face any longer in the room.
it was before i was a mum and valued my free time also a trip to tiffany's, if only to look in the window, but i have been told they have like a bargin basement floor, i think it is the top floor though.
i would love the sopranos tour. i have only just got into it, and am only half way through the 4th series

ooohhh i am so jeleous

would def agree about comfy shoes, my mum walked her big toe nail off, took ages to grow back.

when we wnet we couldnt go around the statue of liberty for obvious reasons and had tocarry our passports everywhere.

but the food is some of the best i have ever had, and loads of selection.

lizandlulu · 27/01/2008 19:37

oh, and i you are looking for a good show, avenue Q is brilliant. its a mix of puppets and people, with a rudey pervey content but really funny. i saw it in london, but my friend was in new york last feb and it was there too. suppose it will still be on? not sure how long these things run for.

and maybe a few hours in the little areas, like china town and little italy, just nice for wandering about and taking in sights and smells.

please fit me in your suitcase, please, please please.

lizandlulu · 27/01/2008 19:45

also forgot to mention there are loads of tramps in central park, especially at 6 am!
one was having a cr*p on top of a massive stone! not even trying to hide out of the way.

sorry if its too much info

Go to the top of the Rockefeller Centre - much less busy than the Empire State Building, and the views are just as great. I agree with Staten Island Ferry (it's realy not worth getting off at Staten Island), and Central Park Zoo. The Met Museum is fantastic. I'm SOO jealous - I want to be back there!
