I'd like to plan a trip to Trieste for next spring and would love recommendations from anyone who has been there before?

It will be me, dh and 17 yr old dc. We love art, history, good food and wine, grand cafes etc

Thanks

I love Trieste! The coffee is amazing - I can never remember the name of the coffee bars but if you google coffee and Trieste you will get a whole list of historical ones to try out. There are some nice museums, caves and a castle to visit depending on what you prefer. And of course you can always pop over the border too. Lots of military history in the area if you're interested in that too.

Also all their coffees have different names to the rest of Italy just to catch you out!

Ooh that sounds really great.
I'm fascinated by its geographical location & its history as part of the Austro-Hungarian empire & the influences of that.
I love planning trips!

I am going on Saturday, but using it as a stopping off place for 24 hrs before heading on to Ljubjana and Lake Bled for 5 days.

We are doing a walking tour in Trieste on Sunday morning with a local. Will report back!

Oh please do @Cranmer ! I love waking tours so I'd love to hear how you found it
Thanks!

If you like reading novels about a place you're visiting, I can really recommend "Zeno's Conscience" by Italo Svevo. You really get a feel for Trieste- plus I found it funny!

The Eataly cafe has a fantastic seafront view 😉

I love reading novels or history books set in specific places & then visiting that place so will 100% read that book before visiting
Thanks for the cafe tip too. I love those grand European cafés & always seek out the oldest one wherever we go

The Eataly café is actually modern but I agree, it has the most amazing views. Definitely worth a visit!

Trieste is so lovely! Look out for all the plaques where James Joyce used to live - all central, from memory. He moved in and out of rented flats loads because of debt and poverty, and it's fascinating to trace his movements and think of what he wrote then.

Also posting to keep informed on this. I want to visit Trieste with my DH next year or the year after, so any info on wheelchair accessibility would be much appreciated.

I went a few years ago to visit a friend there. Did a lovely coastal walk to Casenova’s castle. It’s a beautiful city and lovely just to wander around.
