Hello.
due to fly to canaries in about 42 hours.
my daughter last night started with a sore throat. I’ve done covid test and it’s not that.
mot could be the start of tonsillitis.
can you fly with it?
can the gp give a child a tablet form of the antibiotic instead of the liquid that goes in the fridge.

If she is ok to go and you can get antibiotics if they are in liquid form just stick them in a small cool bag or similar in your hand luggage
Also bear in mind that while pharmacies are really good over there most ordinary shops and supermarkets don’t sell OTC medications such as calpol, throat sweets etc so take them with you

How old is your daughter? . Do you have decent holiday insurance?

AmyandAlice · 17/10/2022 08:59

She’s 9, she’s had a it a few times this year, and generally 2/3 days in antibiotics and she’s much better, but I also don’t want to jump the gun and get her on the antibiotics for it to just be a sore throat, but at the same time if it is we need them adap.

Hoppinggreen brilliant bit of advice there! Thank you.
weve never been abroad as a family before, so I was already a little stressed!

Just be aware that it can take days for a Covid test to be positive. My husband started with a sore throat and it took 3 days to get a positive test.

BalmyBalmes · 17/10/2022 09:19

Id wait and see how she is tomorrow morning. If it's tonsillitis they'll likely be swollen or pussy by then. Be ready by the phone at 8am to get Dr appointment.
If she's still the same it's probably a virus and she'll be fine in 3 or 4 days.
Id also do another covid test tomorrow.

Either way she'll hopefully be right as rain in a few days. Medical care in Spain is generally very good if you have any worries when out there.

AmyandAlice · 17/10/2022 14:10

Thanks Balmybalmes, taking your advice and seeing how she goes.
but does anybody know if you can fly with tonsillitis? I can not find an answer online.

Practically, you can fly with any illness, how would they ever check or know? it's more whether your DD feels too unwell to travel.

You can fly with anything that’s not notifiable I think but if someone seems too unwell they can be refused boarding

maddy68 · 17/10/2022 15:14

You can fly with medicine even if they are I er 100ml. You just take the prescription with it. I do it frequently

LIZS · 17/10/2022 15:20

There is nothing to stop you flying but she may get worse before she feels better. Not sure insurance would cover you out there if sobut ehic/ghic should.

poppym12 · 17/10/2022 15:47

If she's well enough to fly she can go - covid and chickenpox are a couple of things that spring to mind where you should/can't fly.

The lady i sat next to on Wednesday obviously had something and has kindly shared it with me. Felt crap all weekend and am now in bed after spending the morning on a nebuliser. Great holiday.

poppym12 · 17/10/2022 15:48

*shouldn't/can't fly

dizzydizzydizzy · 17/10/2022 15:51

Your GP may be happy to prescribe antibiotics for you to take with you just in case.

BananaCocktails · 17/10/2022 15:55

You can fly with tonsillitis’s . Numbing throat spray will ease the pain
take calpol kids nurofen ( helps with swelling) and can be taken with calpol
some halls soothers will also help

take a bottle of squeezy honey with you in your suitcase which is soothing
and warm drinks - not cold drinks x

AmyandAlice · 17/10/2022 16:03

Thank you all so much for the replies,
she’s had calpol and neurofen this morning.
I nipped out to a meeting and came back to hear she’s been out on the trampoline 🙃🙃
she’s definitely not really poorly, but as mentioned fear she may get worse before better.

You can fly but only you can judge whether she is well enough. My son had the beginnings of what I thought was croup the day we flew to Italy. It was something he had quite a few times previously and it only ever lasted a few days so I wasn't concerned and got our flight as planned. Ended up in hospital on a nebuliser the following day as his trachea had swollen closed and he was struggling to breathe.
Thankfully the Italian hospital was fantastic and he was out with a rented portable nebuliser and able to enjoy the rest of his holidays.

I recommend making sure you have good insurance and know where the local hospitals are and how to get to them just in case.
