Masks in Italy

We are getting the train to Italy next week and I am concerned that my train app says FFP2 masks are compulsory. Everywhere else says they are no longer required, other than in a hospital setting. Could someone possibly confirm the current situation please?

No longer obligatory on public transport since Oct 3rd. It's probably just not updated on the app yet.

TallulahBetty · 12/10/2022 15:30

Just take them anyway in case?

hockeygrass · 12/10/2022 15:34

@Janek yes worth taking a few, when we visited in the summer FFP2 masks were widely worn by hotel staff, taxi drivers etc. I caught a covid like illness (not covid) on the flight home from a coughing child and wish I had worn my mask on the flight.

MoggyP · 12/10/2022 15:36

Just make sure you have suitable masks with you.

Switzerland and Germany have reintroduced transmission control measures in the last week or so, and it's quite likely other places will follow suit

Janek · 12/10/2022 15:37

That would be the obvious solution, but I don't want to buy them if I don't have to, for environmental and frugality reasons!

Thanks Geamhradh, we had a similar conversation this time last year (we always go to Italy in October half term), I wanted to tag you, but it seemed presumptuous! I didn't realise the rules had changed so recently, that definitely explains it!

Crosspost MoggyP. That didn't occur to me. Thanks!

Sorry, I assume everyone still has their reusable ones.

NCAutumn · 12/10/2022 15:47

They were very strict on the vaporetto in Venice. No mask, no entry.

I can't imagine they've relaxed much in a few weeks so I'd take some.

Incrediblebuttrue · 12/10/2022 15:48

They are sold everywhere in Italy so I wouldn't worry about bringing them with you unless you want to wear them on the plane.

Incrediblebuttrue · 12/10/2022 15:49

Or train!

tribpot · 12/10/2022 16:02

Certainly worth wearing FFP2s on public transport as rates start rising again. They're quite sturdy masks and don't need to be worn once.

gogohmm · 12/10/2022 16:12

People were ignoring the signs in September, very few wearing masks.

But I carry one with me just in case, they are cheap compared to the holiday

Geamhradh · 12/10/2022 16:50

I've noticed a few more people wearing them in shops etc the last few weeks, as with schools/unis starting and the 4th dose not being much rolled out yet, cases are rising. Much like the UK in spring though, there's not much call anywhere for reintroduction of any measures.
I noticed they cost a lot less here if you want to wait till you get here!

AttilaTheMeerkat · 12/10/2022 19:51

Requirement for masks on trains was scrapped at the beginning of October.

Which city in Italy?

Janek · 12/10/2022 20:16

It's a village in Lunigiana, so Tuscany.

MissAmbrosia · 13/10/2022 13:00

The stopped on the trains just as we leaving after our recent visit. I would take a couple just in case. Whereabouts in Lunigiana are you staying? I stayed in a fab watermill in Fivizzano years ago. Remember trips to Lerici and Portovenere. Great food.

greenhousegal · 15/10/2022 22:26

I'm just back from Tuscany. No masks required anywhere. That could change I suppose if the situation worsens. No harm to stick a mask in your bag surely? I wore one in the airport and on the plane anyway. Germ factories!

MrsTuxedo · 16/10/2022 10:15

The price of FFP2 is capped, so you will pay 50-75 cents for each depending on size of box. They are very cheap, have a few with you.
Whenever we go and visit MIL, I buy them and bring them back to UK.
