Tips to avoid tummy bugs abroad?!

So the last 2 abroad holidays we've had DS 5 has had sickness and diarrhoea and we are heading off again soon and I'm wanting to do everything possible to stop it from happening again! We are going to the Canary Islands.
Any top tips of dos and don'ts while abroad to avoid any bugs like this please?
We use sanitiser where possible, and drink bottled water.

Bottled water only and stay away from the buffet.

Don’t eat at hotel buffets. Only drink bottled water. If you get an upset stomach then charcoal is very useful to have with you

Cross post 😀

Wash hands before all meals. Only bottled water. No ice cubes. Avoid buffets.

Hire a villa and buy and cook your own food? We do that.

No buffets, peel fruit. Drink beer 😂

I’ve generally gone further afield but the things I do are:
No ice in drinks
Be aware of salad items like lettuce having been washed in water that will cause you problems
Always wash hands after handling money
Brush teeth with bottled water

Go to Holland and Barret and get Acidophilus. I haven’t been sick abroad since I started taking it. The idea is that you fill your gut with good bacteria which overcomes any bad bacteria.

In all inclusive try and eat food that is cooked to order or served cold I guess so omelettes or pancakes for breakfast, meat cooked to order on the grill for dinner, dont eat luke warm food if at all possible. Eat food that has just been put out before any germy people touch it.

when we were travelling in Asia and feeling specially neurotic we did…
*bottled or purified water
*only eat fruit and veg that was cooked or peeled
*no drinks with ice (ice cubes may not be bottled water)
*hardboiled eggs, not soft
*really obsessive hand hygiene especially in shared bathrooms, eg wash hands then turn off tap with paper towel and open door with shoulder.

i think it helps a bit, but it’s not much fun.

Stick to well cooked food, avoid buffets and salads. Wash fruit. Wash your hands frequently with soap and water, especially before eating, sanitiser when soap and water unavailable. Stick to shops and wrapped ice cream, rather than street food and street vendors. Be careful with bottled (mineral) waters, some can be high in natural salts and can cause loose stool/diarrhoea, especially in children, Evian is ok for most people and usually widely available. Internationally known branded food and drinks are usually safer than ‘unknown’ brands if there is a choice. It really doesn’t matter if your 5 year old eats freshly cooked chips every day, it’s less likely to cause a tummy upset than unfamiliar cuisine.

Drink bottled water only, do not eat salad, eat very well cooked food, do not use the tap water to brush your teeth & wash your hands still managed to get a stomach bug.

Take tins of baked beans and spaghetti hoops and a tin-opener.

Sea water and swimming pool water are a common source of infections.
Make sure he showers after and doesn't get water in his mouth.
I wouldn't be too concerned about the food and drink. I drink the water everywhere although in the Canaries it tends to be de-salinated and doesn't taste too good.

This is interesting as the last time my son and husband were the only ones who went in the sea and pool the day they got vomiting and diarrhoea a day or so later 😳

Hand sanitiser doesn't kill norovirus.

chipsandpeas · 01/11/2022 13:08

watch accidently swallowing water when in the shower - once i reaslised this i stopped getting stomach bugs on holiday and ive been to places like egypt and mexico

CBAironing · 01/11/2022 13:10

A charcoal tablet each day on holiday. Take another if you feel dodgy. Holland and Barratt sell them. They are fantastic.
