Rome in Oct half term-do I need to book restaurants?

Do we need to book restaurants in advance? We’ve booked a weekend break to Rome that falls over half term 🤦‍♀️ The couple of city breaks we’ve had post covid we’ve struggled to get tables at ‘nice’ restaurants as they’ve been booked in advance. We’d prefer to wander round and choose where/when to eat ad hoc but don’t want to end up eating somewhere crappy as everywhere is booked up. We like good food/not touristy, so where locals might eat at a weekend. Staying in trastavere, so any good recommendations would be lovely

I'd say yes. Roman restaurants seem to get booked up a lot.

We’ve done Rome a few times in half term and never booked a restaurant - we just go to whichever one looks nice.

Maybe book if you want to go somewhere specific and special.

we went last october half term and our hotel would book us nice restaurants on the day or we just turned up . It was still fairly quiet though as were quite a few covid restrictions

If I can recommend one for you - this is great for coffee and pastries in the morning as well as the restaurant. It’s by the Trevi Fountain.

UK half term coincides with the long "ponte" weekend end of October this year, so you may be best picking a couple out and booking ahead.
You can't go wrong in Trastevere for cheap but good trattorias. The best will have only the 3 main Roman pasta dishes on the menu- carbonara, cacio e pepe and carbonara. That's how you tell they are authentic. Also cheap as chips!
Arlu (just out of Trastevere on the other side of the Vatican museum walls) is great.
