NYC - will hotel charge penalty for checking out a day early?

I will be there soon and have booked several nights. However, I have now changed my flight to come back a day early. I am happy to pay for the extra night I no longer need and, rather than check out in the morning the day I fly, keep it until I fly that evening.

Will the hotel penalise me for checking out a day early? I assume not as long as I'm happy to pay the extra night I won't be using. I will call tomorrow to check but wondered if anyone knows what they do in NYC? I have heard of penalties being imposed for early check outs but assume this is where the guests expect a refund of stays not used and the penalty is because they could have sold that room otherwise. That's not the case for me as I'm happy to pay for the night I don't need.

Thanks

I would be very surprised if they did!

To clarify, it means I check out the evening before rather than first thing the next morning. I don't mind them charging me the night's fee as I understand they could have sold that room. I can't edit my stay online with the revised dates as the room price has now doubled in price!

No they won’t charge you, just check out when you leave for the airport. I’ve done this plenty of times the world over, if I have an afternoon or evening flight I book that night, to save hanging around, with nowhere to go.

Daisy03 · 10/10/2022 22:12

Definitely not.
Would only be if you expected not to pay for that night

I’d ask them what they charge for late checkout and double check they won’t refund you the difference, they chance is small but not impossible.

Hotandbothereds · 10/10/2022 22:16

No I don’t think you’ll be charged extra, but you could ask them if they could offer a late check out rather than pay for the extra night?

They might not, but you’ve got nothing to lose by asking the question.

Thank you! Very helpful to know and good point that I lose nothing by asking. I just assumed it would be a no as rates have doubled since I booked but there's definitely no harm asking! Thanks everyone.

Just ask, as you are willing to pay for the full stay I can’t really see a problem and they might be glad to have the room back to offer another guest.

ApolloandDaphne · 11/10/2022 04:34

You won't be charged a penalty but you will still have to pay for the room for that night.

FaazoHuyzeoSix · 11/10/2022 04:45

If you are paying for the room on the last night they have no reason to care whether you sleep there on the final night.

If they have a good chance of being able to find a new guest for that night they ought to at least partially refund you depending on how much notice they get. If you only tell them at the moment you check out then I wouldn't expect a refund as they would have a very low likelihood of a random walk-in arriving before nightfall, but if you tell them today they might have no trouble re-selling it.

The fact that rates have doubled might go in your favour, they might charge you a late check out fee, and then be able to resell the room that night to someone who isn’t checking in until late.

Its worth an ask, worst case you do what you were planning to anyway so you’ve got nothing to lose.

Most hotels would charge the extra night. There won’t be an additional penalty though. I’ve worked in hotels, generally a room won’t be flipped unless you vacate during regular housekeeping hours.
