Turning to the wisdom of MN. I have flights booked already to Innsbruck (but not yet the return- could be back to Innsbruck, or Vienna or Munich) All travel will be by train.
I'm looking to do It Innsbruck and Salzburg plus 5-6 days resting and walking in a resort. This is where I'd like some recommendations please!
Has to be gettable to by train.
Hotel not self-catering.

I was looking at Zell am See and had virtually decided to go for it, then did some reading up and for every person who loves it there's another who says it's lost all its charm and is a chaotic hotspot.

Any suggestions?
Ta!

Go up the valley from Zell am See to Saalbach or its neighbour Hinterglemm. 20 minutes from Zell am See, so you can go from there to Zell for a day by bus to see the lake and the glacier.

Much quieter than Zell am See but with the similar mountains and lots of high level and low level walks. If you are with your family/children/teenagers there is plenty for them to do too. Stay in one of the hotels offering a free Joker Card and all of the cable cars, the valley bus (including to Zell am See) and many of the attractions are free of charge. See the Tourist Office website - saalbach.com

OK - there is no train station but the #680 bus leaves from right outside Zell am See station.

Salzburg is brilliant.

Innsbruck is a must; all ringed by mountains. Innsbruck to Achensee is a lovely journey and Achensee itself is beautiful.

They'd be my must sees.

We went to zell and it was beautiful and very charming, it was busy but no more than any other holiday destination.

www.haymon.at/en/hotel-haymon.html Stayed here in Seefeld a few years ago. The food was lovely. About 30 mins on train from Innsbruck and the line runs on to Munich. Mittelwald was a nice day out, plus the funicular/cable car. There are a couple of outdoor pools and it's possible to do carriage rides.

Having a look at these suggestions.

If you have kids under 10 in tow then Kinder hotels are great - many have fabulous kids pools, great rooms with separate kids room, free childcare, play areas indoor and out etc. The 4 and 5 star ones are usually quite fancy for a good value price, and offer luxury things for adults like spas!

Another vote for Hinterglemm! We loved it there. So much to do but chilled out at the same time. Stayed at the Adler Resort.

This place is lovely, quiet, lots of outdoor activities & a short drive from Innsbruck. The hotel collected us from the airport: www.hotel-rieser.com/en/
Later we took the train cross country to Vienna.

The salt mine on the edge of Salzburg is a brilliant place to visit, it was been a tourist destination for years, and you descend on a wooden slide.

We went about 5 years ago to Zell Am See and it was completely chaotic to a ridiculous level. But it may have changed post pandemic.

Havanananana · 14/10/2022 09:28

As @Delatron suggests, Zell am See was in danger of becoming a victim of its own success with crowds of tourists in high season and the local, traditional shops and restaurants being replaced by businesses catering for the international tourists. Much of the charm was in danger of disappearing (although the stunning nature is of course still there).

Since the pandemic Zell has got much quieter. Last summer there were comparatively few tourists, and this summer has not been much busier (and nowhere like as busy as it was pre-Covid). That said, I'd head to Saalbach or Hinterglemm instead and just visit Zell and Kitzsteinhorn for day trips from there. There is plenty to do in S-H, particularly hiking and mountain biking. For children there are playgrounds at the top of every cable car station, and Europe's biggest "Go Ape"-style climbing park, with zip wires and multiple courses to attempt. And there are loads of mountain restaurants, meadows and quiet areas where you can just chill and enjoy the views.
