Eurostar

Recently had my first trip on Eurostar and I so enjoyed it. Amazingly fast journey to Belgium, all went smoothly, even the queuing at St Pancras wasn't too bad.

But ... £250 per person!!

Is there a way to find cheaper tickets anywhere? Why is it so expensive?

I'd love to travel to France or northern Europe without the hefty carbon footprint of flying or the huge amount of time it takes by ferry.

Is there a secret trick to this that I am missing?

Booking further ahead is cheaper, often about £50 each way.

A580Hojas · 07/10/2022 21:46

We booked more than a month before travelling.

We booked more than a month before travelling.

I go next month to Belgium on the Eurostar, we booked in June and it cost us £60pp return.

greenacrylicpaint · 07/10/2022 21:57

booking in advance and with clubcard vouchers.
also checking on the belgium, dutch, french eurostar sites for good deals.
we did amsterdam in spring for 70€ per leg per person via the dutch national rail website.

The only way I know is to book far in advance and to be as flexible as possible as to the time of day you travel as, like most travel conpanies nowadays they use "dynamic pricing".
I've used them a few times for trips to the Netherlands and was lucky to get cheap fares (the lowest currently is £39). Once I booked about six weeks before; for my last trip just last month I booked almost three months beforehand.
Agree totally about the experience itself though 🙂 It's great, isn't it?
One other thing... make sure you subscribe to their emails as you'll sometimes receive money off codes to use. My latest trip cost just £70 return as I had a 20% off voucher.

I want to know if and when Ebbsfleet will be reopening before l book again.
Love Eurostar but getting into St Pancras is a pita.

stringbean · 07/10/2022 23:33

No plans to open Ebbsfleet or Ashford International for a few years sadly - which is a pain as much easier to reach than flogging into London if you're in the south www.independent.co.uk/travel/news-and-advice/eurostar-kent-ashford-ebbsfleet-brexit-b2150948.html?amp

Brexit has a lot to do with it - they don't have the infrastructure or resources to deal with processing passports apparently.

I live in Belgium and have NEVER paid that much! Bookings can normally be done 6 months in advance. You need to pick your dates and times. I would not expect to pay more than 120 euros for a return. Sometimes you get bargains to go Premier.

MissAmbrosia · 08/10/2022 22:24

In fact we have just been to Italy by train and it cost 250 euros each to go all the way to Liguria and back in first class!

Dave20 · 05/11/2022 22:46

Hi everyone, shot in the dark here for a random question to do with parking.
I went to Ebbsfleet International today to pick up DW, and originally went to the wrong place.

I was supposed to go the park and wait area, where you can wait for up to 20 minutes for free.

I ended up going into a car park, I knew I’d missed my turn for the park and wait area but kept going because it was a one way road. I couldn’t turn around.

I ended up going into a car park ( no barrier) went in and straight out.

I then found the park and wait area.

Im aware they have ANPR cameras. Will I get a ticket for driving into the car park and driving straight out again? I genuinely got confused about where to go.

It’s one of those silly things, but I’m worried about it now!

Hi Ambrose how did you book this and how far ahead could you book? I'd like to start getting ideas and rough prices together for a summer holiday to the med by train but I can't find it. Eurostar haven't got any prices yet so I've got no idea if it's feasible x

Oriunda · 10/12/2022 12:20

When did you travel? If it was during any of the school holidays (UK, French, Belgian etc) then that will explain the price.

TreesAtSea · 10/12/2022 16:59

@Festivfrenzy I'm not the poster you tagged, but for all things related to train travel, have a look at www.seat61.com - an invaluable resource.

MissAmbrosia · 11/12/2022 21:31

Yes to Seat61.com. Eurostar normally has tickets 6 months in advance. French trains it's normally 3 months - but you can get a bargain if you are quick to book.

Teeheehee1579 · 11/12/2022 21:34

What class did you travel? We sell Eurostar (amongst many other rail journeys) and I am very surprised that you were charged this for standard class. Standard premier or business premier certainly. Unless you did my buy it direct and someone charged you a big mark up!!

MissAmbrosia · 11/12/2022 21:39

Thetrainline.com or rail Europe also sell the tickets at the same prices. If going to South of France I would avoid Paris and look at trains via Lille, Brussels , Marne La Vallee or Avignon depending on where the Eurostar does a direct trip. I know, for example, from Brussels you can get a direct train to Marseille or Montpellier. Bahn.de is brilliant for looking up the timetables. You can look in English. Happy to help if you know where you want to go.
