We're usually a 3-nights camping in the New Forest type of family, but are planning a holiday of a lifetime next summer. We're hoping to do a week long boat trip around the Greek Islands but want to add a city stay at the beginning.
If I book flights , hotels, boat cruise etc separately what's the best way to get insurance so that if one bit fails (e.g. the boat sinks and we can't go on it) that the rest of the holiday isn't lost and we can reschedule. I just don't know if its best to go to a proper travel agent and get them to book everything on our behalf so we're covered? Any advice very welcome.

Most holiday insurance covers you for illness before or during the holiday and cancellations — flights, hotels etc. I imagine that if you booked a boat trip and the boat sank before you arrived you'd be compensated by the boat company, but if not the insurance would kick in.

I've used Staysure successfully for a few years but have been fortunate enough not to have to make a claim. I never book through a travel agent, always book independently.

Here's a list of companies:

Phone a couple of the 5 star ones and ask whether the issues you have in mind would be covered or not.

Oh, and book everything with your credit card, not a debit card. Makes it easier to claim back if things get complicated.

I think there is a difference between booking each element separately and booking at a package of one element isn’t delivered. If the plane gets cancelled it’s not the fault of the hotel and the boat if the plane doesn’t leave. You really do need to find out how booking separately affects your rights. Also whether it affects insurance and changing plans at no cost to you. Whether insurance will cover what you specify is a moot point. If the boat sinks, the hotel is still available and so is the plane. You might get a refund for the boat but why should insurance cover what you can still access? You need to check this and if you should book the elements separately. We now ensure our holidays are classed as a “package”.
