I'd really like to plan a holiday that doesn't involve us all being too hot and grumpy!
Please tell me about the amazing holidays you've had in cold places!

So far I'm thinking of Iceland or New York in the winter.

Please inspire me!

I would say the Arctic in July. We did an expedition cruise. Amazing but teens would need to be interested in wildlife! Going to the Antarctic this winter.

Alaska isn’t cold in summer. Great destination though.

Budapest in December- around 0 degrees, Christmas markets and mulled wine everywhere, ourdoor thermal spas. And the hungarians really jnow how to do winter comfort food!

OrangePumpkinLobelia · 05/10/2022 16:25

we did lapland also. The Dcs are too old for the Santa thing now and we always said we would go back for huskie rides, cross country skiing etc. it was amazing!

Tromsø! I visited many years ago and now live here!
Direct flights from Gatwick in the winter.
Northern lights, whale watching, dog sledding are a few fun things to do.

The ice hotel in Sweden - one night sleeping in a beautifully carved ice bed (with a warm sleeping bag) in the ice hotel itself, and a few nights in a warm room to allow time to go snowmobiling and dog-sledding. We didn't see the northern lights when we went but it was still magical. Would really like to see the lights though!

Came on to recommend ice hotel Jukkasjarvi, Sweden. We did see the lights, two out of three nights. Very lucky.

I went to Alaska one June and they ended up with a small heatwave (high 80s to low 90s) and I came home with a tan. Grin I found the heat there worse than 100+ in Florida because there was no air con anywhere I went in Alaska (I stayed in Juneau and only went around that area.).

It's absolutely stunning there though, not always as cold as people think but if you went in springtime then it would be cooler for sure.

I went to Chicago and Washington DC in February this year. DH hated the cold but he complains equally when it’s hot but I adored it! It was -25c at nighttime and a warm -15c during the day! Washington DC was much warmer at around 12c during the day.

The empty museums, the hot chocolates in those cosy cafes, late night walks in the snow (Chicago did a very good job of clearing the snow so made the most of it!), having breakfast through the window in the restaurant while it was bitterly cold was gorgeous. Not to mention, the hotels were much cheaper! Do it OP!

Berlin is lovely any time of year.

I went to Yosemite in early February this year and it was stunning! I would love to go back.

Iceland was amazing. I went in august and it wasn’t warm - jeans and jumper weather at least.

Lakes Bled & Bohinj, Slovenia

Both are absolutely stunning but, like a lot of central Europe, gets warm/hot in the summer so pick your time of year carefully. I've been in September twice and had temperatures in the mid 20s.

Ruka, Finland. Fantastic holiday

Iceland to me is better in the summer… that’s fairly cool still mind

Sweden, wild camping is my next aim.

I'm off to do a horse riding trip with camping inside the Swedish Arctic circle next summer. I can't wait!

Iceland has been my favourite cold destination to date, with Norway a very close second.

As you can probably tell, I like cold destinations... I am definitely an autumn/winter person so always want to escape the heat of summer

LesLavandes · 07/10/2022 08:29

If you go to Iceland or Norway in winter, do you need a ski suit?

Hilarymantelspencilsharpener · 07/10/2022 08:37

Depends if you want really cold or just not too warm.

Stockholm, Copenhagen, Vienna, Berlin for city breaks.

Canada, New England, Northern France in autumn is beautiful, Black Forest, Tuscany in October. New Zealand in June/July.

Weirdlynormal · 08/10/2022 15:03

@CampervanQueen that sounds great. Are you using a particular company, or self help?

ReachedTheEndofCake · 09/10/2022 16:14

@CampervanQueen yes I’d love to go back in the summer to see the difference one day!

Glorious

We’ve done NYC, Tokyo and Berlin in winter and they were all fabulous in the soft silent snow

TheTurn0fTheScrew · 09/10/2022 16:20

we went to Prague in January one year. There was a light dusting of snow making everything even more beautiful, but you could still get around really easily and it wasn't crazily cold - between 0-5 degrees if I remember correctly. Much nicer without all the summer tourists, but as it's a large city everything's still open out of peak season.

Crikeyalmighty · 09/10/2022 16:21

Are in Sweden is nice. Much like Swiss and Austrian ski resorts but still nice if you don't ski- very high standards and dog sledding etc -

FormerlySpeckledyHen · 09/10/2022 16:55

Finnish Lapland. 150km inside the Arctic Circle . Awesome.

AriettyHomily · 09/10/2022 17:00
