Any ideas of where to go for a lovely 'once in a lifetime' honeymoon, with a nearly 3 year old?

Any ideas? I want to go somewhere beautiful, and have a once in a lifetime holiday, but absolutely couldn't leave ds behind.

Ds loves the beach and the sea, can stand moderate heat but not too hot, and I wouldn't want to go anywhere that would require ds (and us) to have any jabs.

I can only think of France (and thats only because we went there last year) and I really want to venture further afield.

TIA

Maldives? Langkawi? Bali? St Lucia? haven't been anywhere more exotic than Francesince having DS but have lots of more intrepid (and better off !) friends who have been with kids

Maldives

Fiji

Cook Islands

Australia

New Zealand

Canada

Hawaii

We love them all

Anguilla. Sandy beaches, shallow warm sea where your ds can bath the whole day. However, other than being on the beach the whole day there's nothing much you can do.
I'd go island hopping in Greece in late May.

francagoestohollywood · 24/01/2008 21:12

Sorry I meant there is nothing much else to do on Anguilla other than going to the beach.

Italy or Portugal. Lots to see, and child friendly. Spend the money you would have spent going long-haul on lovely hotel, meals out etc.

Take him on a cruise. DH did some research for our honeymoon and Royal Carribean are really fab with kids, but still really luxurious too. We had a really unforgetable time.

We took walkie talkies with a baby listening function on so that we could leave him locked in the room in the evening to go and have a drink etc. The nice porter(?) man also listened out for DS while we were gone; with his ear against the door.

PARADISE ON EARTH and all the proceeds goes to running an orphanage, and a school to teach women crafts, and trade her crafts... It is the most beautiful place on the planet (in my limited experience)

sabaidii · 25/01/2008 03:06

Lankawi, Hua Hin, Na Trang, Laos is beautiful, so is Indonesia.

Island of Roatan

Ixtapa

Little Cayman

Cruises are great as well

tell us more.

  • Do you want a kids club?
  • Do you want to laze around on a beach all day and don't mind entertaining DS?
  • You like boats?
  • Do you want some sightseeing? organised day trips or prefer to rent a car and wander on an itinerary?
  • Do you want to party or quiet romantic?

How far are you willing to go? and WHEN?

PanicPants · 25/01/2008 15:13

It's got to be in August as I'm a teacher [heavy sigh] and yes to all your questions!
Well we probably would want ds with us most of the time, but would like the option of having the odd hour or two to ourselves sometimes!

I thought that some of the places mentioned would be too hot for a 3 year old?

PanicPants, did you see my link below?

It was hot, but not too hot. We spent Christmas there a few years ago, when our oldest was 18 months. It is a truly magical place. Not very touristy.

Just 10 minutes walk down a path from the hotel, past a hidden away hindu temple, you find the most lovely long sandy beach, in fact the beach that goes around all the southern tip of India.

To get to the hotel you drive 15 minutes through pure jungle in a safari vehicle. The next town is half hour away by car from the main road, and it is really nice, more crowds, but fantastic arts and crafts to buy, nice restaurants! Pineapple and coconut pancakes, yum! Beaches, tours, etc.

At the hotel, the chef would come in the morning and ask if you fancied veg, chicken or fish for dinner, so he could make his shopping list when going to the market!

There is Yoga, and Ayurvedic treatments.

I went for a Keralan foot massage. They dont massage your feet. The masseur was hanging from the ceiling of a remote bamboo hut in the jungle massaging your back with his feet.

I told my husband just yesterday, we ARE going back. We most definitely are.

PanicPants · 25/01/2008 15:32

Yes I did, and it looks lovely - but did you need any jabs to go?

QuintessentialShadow · 25/01/2008 15:35

Nothing else but the usual jabs you need to go somewhere hot and tropical. Oh, and malaria profylactics (which we didnt take because we used local moscito oils, electric wall plugs, incense, long sleeved clothing, and moscito net over the beds....).

slug · 25/01/2008 16:01

Croatia. I'm a bit adverse to heat but have successfully holidayed there with the sluglet for the last 2 years. Split has a shallow sandy beach and is where all the boats leave from to the islands, so good for day trips. Plus it is cheap to get to (easyjet) and cheap to holiday in.

Failing that, I had a wonderful time once staying on an island in the Stockholm arcepeligo.(sp?) The weather is not as reliable, but you can have that rare combination of isolation and a capital city close by.

QuintessentialShadow · 25/01/2008 16:20

Oh, and if you want a life time experience out of the ordinary, which is fab for a three year old, then I have your solution:

Across the Polar Circle

Low cost airline Norwegian fly direct from Stanstead.

No jabs, no visas, just take your passport and go.

Most summers are lazy days of sunshine, and in august temperatures can be between 25 and 30. But because it is so far north, only a brave soul will actually bathe. Plenty of life at the beach though!

QuintessentialShadow · 25/01/2008 16:21

Oh. And MIDNIGHT sun. The sun dont go down. Which is great, of course.

WestCountryLass · 25/01/2008 20:44

Have to say Tromso looks totally amazing, I want to go there!!!!

QuintessentialShadow · 25/01/2008 21:33

bumping for you.

(and because I want more peole to discover my home town)

PanicPants · 26/01/2008 17:50

Wow - looks amazing QS!

Will look into it. Do you live there?

OP posts:
ConfusedMover · 26/01/2008 17:58

Dubrovnik

slim22 · 27/01/2008 01:45

QS, that sounds amazing.
August will be very hot around the mediterranean.....
You can also do the atlantic coast (brittany all the way down to Biarritz) but that's not very honeymoony...
I think QS wins with the wow factor.
