Is this really a terrible time to go? Maybe over Easter? I have wanted to go for years but for various reasons don't think it will be possible later....

It’s such an expensive destination I’d personally wait until you get a different time off.

DD's school trip went in March & had a great time. Just expect it to be cold.

I went in March a few years ago. Hotels were a lot cheaper than in the summer. Weather is unpredictable. When we went the locals were out wearing t shirts commenting how warm it was. I disagreed and was in my parka and thermals. It was sunny with clear skies. The week before I arrived the weather was awful.

Also you have a very good chance of seeing the Northern Lights.

We went early April a few years ago, first week of Easter holiday. We hired a car and drove along the Southern coast and golden circle. We had a brilliant time, no where was very busy, driving was really easy and the weather whilst cold was manageable for our kids, all of which we thought might have been very different over winter.

We went same time years ago. So much of the natural beauty spots where knee deep and above in snow we didn't see as much as we would have liked. Plus no hiking or ice cave tours cos clearly weather was terrible.

I'd go later

20th March 2023 is the Spring Equinox. We were in Iceland (Vic), it was a great place to experience it.

I went then. Driving was scary, although the Icelanders didn't seem to think so! Snow in some areas but not in Reykjavik or around the coast. Very very windy!

I liked it though. Spa was brilliant and Reykjavik is very cool. Think the Golden Triangle might have been better later in the year.

It's not a great time in my opinion. The other side of winter is nicer. It's just when the snow has finished melting and before the new spring growth comes through, so it is brown and soggy. I'd say the landscape is at its least beautiful in late winter (though it's always impressive). The light is OK by then and the weather can be fine, some chance of snow and storms but also reasonable chance of sunny, relatively mild weather.
