Blue lagoon iceland

We’re heading to Iceland for 3 nights in February half term and are trying to decide whether to include the blue lagoon or not (travelling with a teen and 10 year old). It’s an additional £250 and we’d need to do it at the end of the golden circle tour. Would we be missing out by not going? My daughter doesn’t like crowds and is quite particular about her hair, so I’m concerned she may get a bit grumpy!

Day 1 we will do northern lights tour (hopefully), day 2 southern Iceland and day 3 golden circle.

Any experience or advice please?

I would go to the Secret Lagoon at Fluðir instead, it's much cheaper and I would argue a better experience! secretlagoon.is/

it was the highlight of our stay in Iceland and the most fun we have ever had together as a family. My oldest DD really worried about her hair I (as do I, we both have frizzy hard to style hair)and had to be persuaded, but soon forgot about that once we were in the water. It’s great there , especially the bars serving sparkling wine! It’s really enjoyable to float about in warm bubbly water sipping fizz. It was quite cold weather and raining on and off which added to the weirdness of it.

Having said that, the cost is absurd (as is the cost of everything in Iceland) so if there is a cheaper alternative I’d go for that. But do do it!

Hmm - we enjoyed it because we were fortunate to stay at the Blue Lagoon Hotel and so had access to second, much quieter lagoon. I found the main lagoon area quite underwhelming and a bit grubby in the changing facilities.

I loved Blue Lagoon and it's a unique experience but the Secret Lagoon was my favourite place and way cheaper.

Would your children be comfortable with the compulsory communal naked showering before they can go in? (Would you?)

tickticksnooze · 19/09/2022 13:14

Just because if your daughter doesn't like crowds I can't imagine she'd be very keen on showering naked with strangers

We went recently, my experience fwiw

  • it was a howling gale and sleeting, ok if you walked backwards!
  • teens might be taken unawares by changing. Basically you go through to the changing area (there are a couple of private changing rooms but mostly people strip off there). Put clothes in locker. Then you are supposed to walk through to the showers which do all have doors but my teens were kind of horrified that they were fairly see through, but ok if you don't look closely! and shower naked before putting cossie on (we put ours on to walk to the shower and took them off again in it - bear in mind they don't give you a towel until you get OUT of the Blue Lagoon). Better than I thought it would be but a bit confusing.
  • they advised us to slather long hair in conditioner and tie up before going in, my hair was fine. And our skin was great after!

It's an artificial "lagoon" with the warm water provided by the waste water outflow from the adjacent electricity power works. I didn't think it was particularly scenic and wouldn't recommend it . There are lots of outdoor swimming pools/spas in Iceland with warm water provided by geothermal springs. You might just want to go to one of the local ones in Reykjavik. Much cheaper. e.g Sundhollin Public Baths.

Thanks so much, all really useful replies. I’m leaning towards the secret lagoon, I think it will be a better value taster.

You don’t have to do the group shower. There are individual cubicles if you prefer.
