London to Cancun

So we’re thinking of booking a December 2023 family holiday to Cancun in Mexico but I suffer from anxiety and have a fear of flying. I’ve been Googling turbulence and it shows approaching Cancun airport as one of places that gets bad turbulence!!

Has anyone flown there (and back to London) and be able to let me know how the flight was please? Thanks

I did last August. Uneventful flights.

Go somewhere else then. However turbulence anywhere doesn’t happen every day. It’s certain weather conditions that provoke it. There’s a whole world out there!!

You can get it badly on any flight to be honest! One of the worst ones I’ve seen on you tube was a usually very uneventful flight to Ibiza. I’ve never heard anything about it being particularly awful to Cancun.

Went August 2019 and no problems

Also pilots fly around the worst areas.

Thanks for your replies all.

Aesopstables - did you hear of cyclospora out there? Some sort of food poisoning apparently from some travellers experienced from their trip to Mexico? Do you use their tap water to brush teeth or do hotels provide bottled water? Thanks

I've flown in and out....it's like anywhere, there is a chance of a few bumps...

It's in the tropics so there's a chance of turbulence associated with storms, which usually tend to build in the afternoons but the pilots can generally avoid the worse of that..It can sometimes be a bit bumpy on approach, but that can happen anywhere....and of course on any long flight there's a chance you'll encounter some bumps due to jet streams pretty much anywhere on the route, again that's something the pilots do their best to avoid or at least minimise.

Turbulence fundamentally is all a bit random wherever in the world you go but the risks are always minimised - I certainly wouldn't avoid going somewhere on holiday simply because some websites claim somewhere is unusually turbulent.

It’s no worse than anywhere else. Have you tried meds for the flight (eg diazepam?). Makes a real difference.

NCFT0922 · 19/09/2022 22:59

I’ve been to Mexico several times. Had turbulence once but I’ve also had turbulence flying to Greece. You don’t sound like a frequent flyer. Maybe try somewhere closer to home initially if you’re nervous.

You should only use bottled water. I’ve even heard of people being careful to keep their mouths closed in the shower so they don’t accidentally swallow any of the water that way.

I just got back from Cancun 2 weeks ago. Brushed teeth with bottled water - the resort provide loads and put bottles by the bathroom sink.

I don't remember any significant turbulence flying in and out, but there's always the risk of a bit of bumpiness in the tropics.
