Will summer 2023 prices go up or down?

I know you lovely people don't have crystal balls.

But I am wondering if its worth booking next year's holiday now or waiting until say November / December to book?

The prices are expensive and I can't believe the budget I am considering!

But with the cost of everything going up so quickly, will holidays / flights do the same? Or will they have to come down in price to get people on the planes / in the hotels as so many will be priced out of booking a holiday?

I'm watching to see the answers.
However, I think if you want a specific holiday/hotel/date, I'd book soon & not check the price in the future !
If you can be flexible & change your ideal, it might be worth waiting.

I booked two months ago.
£100 more expensive than last year per person. However its gone up £20 since I booked.
I was limited to school holidays and wanted to go a day before most schools shut for the holidays (mine have an inset day) as it saved £600. So for me I felt it was best to book while it was available.

I'm holding fire. They're much more expensive for next year than this year. Going to wait to see what happens given the precarious financial situation the country is in atm.

I usually book after Christmas / early Jan before January pay day. Most people don’t have spare money at that time to book and prices go back up again end of Jan once people have been paid again and January blues are in full swing.

Live4weekend · 16/09/2022 17:10

Thanks everyone. I will try and resist. Most of the places I am interested in have no free child places at the minute. (Although a couple do).

Might hold out a bit longer to see if the prices reduce and book around Christmas / early Jan.

Interesting comment from Definitelysometime.

I have been wondering about this for a while. People's holiday budgets are being squeezed and the weak pound is a problem for travel. I read an article that hotel prices in London had gone up by 44%.

We are definitely not able to do the kind of holidays we did in the past so I am wondering, if the price of holidays are going to continue to rise, how will people pay for them with the current stagflation conditions?

Howabsolutelyfanfuckingtastic · 19/09/2022 11:52

I heard prices are going up from a friend who works in travel, may be best to book rather than hold off.

Caspianberg · 19/09/2022 14:08

We have a holiday let. We are already fully booked for July and August 2023. So I suggest you don’t wait too long if you want somewhere specific.

With energy, staff salaries, food, petrol et all increasing, I can’t imagine many places will reduce prices. Either stay the same or increase

Definitelysometime · 19/09/2022 16:43

I would @Live4weekend

I also work in travel and we've just put 2023 prices up, its been unavoidable as our costs rise. Bookings for peak weeks next year looking very strong already so not expecting to need to lower them again.

Porcupineintherough · 19/09/2022 18:08

I think travel abroad will continue to increase I price as the pound continues to fall.

CampervanKween · 19/09/2022 23:11

Think we might be spending a lot of time in our caravan next year 🤔

BookwormButNoTime · 20/09/2022 06:35

I have two holidays booked for next year - one a ski trip so had to be booked a year in advance to get what we wanted, and the other an annual trip to see family in the USA with a holiday tagged on the end.

Both were booked the day the flights went on sale and both have increased considerably since.

I agree that if you have a specific place or accommodation you want to stay in and have fixed dates, that it’s best to book straight away.

GreeboIsMySpiritAnimal · 20/09/2022 06:40

I looked in to rebooking the villa we'd just got back from for next year and it had more than doubled in price from what we'd paid earlier this year!

exLtEveDallas · 20/09/2022 06:43

I wanted to rebook the place we went to this Aug, for next Aug as soon as we got back. It was a similar price (I think about £100-150 more) than we paid this year.

DH told me to wait until Xmas which is when we usually book. I checked this weekend and it’s gone up by £700 😡. Yeah, I’d book now…

Against the dollar. The Euro is also falling against the dollar.

We are at a 37 year low against the dollar so anywhere that uses the dollar will be very expensive at the moment.

But who knows what will happen over the next few months.

Ylvamoon · 20/09/2022 06:57

No daubt, prices will go up.
However, I also believe that bookings will go down at with a bit of luck, there will be some gret last minute deals.

Not necessarily. Lower demand will mean fewer flights, and airline slots are negotiated ages in advance so it’s not something they can just add on last minute. They aren’t going to fly half empty planes out or try to fill them by slashing prices. They will just have fewer flights that are full at sky high (excuse the pun) prices to factor in the reduction in volume.

We saw a lot of flight consolidation this summer and I fully expect it to continue. I think the days of cheap last minute holidays abroad are over.

Live4weekend · 20/09/2022 11:34

Thanks everyone.

We are quite restricted so I am going to book in the next few weeks. And then not look at the prices!
