Has anyone recently been to New York and used a New York pass? Is it worth it? Do you need to pre book things?

I’m going with dp in November for 5 nights. What are your best tips? I last went 25 years ago and am aware things have changed!

Best tip I have is to get the metro pass. We got a 7 day pass but only went for 5 days and it made everything so much cheaper. It's around $30 and it can get you too and from the airport as well. Life saver

@bossgirl94 Thank you!! Did you have to book the attractions in advance? And any recommendations for places to eat?

Take a look at passcomparison.com It's an online calculator to try and work out which pass is best for you. We got a special offer by buying our passes through Expedia - they seemed to have a special deal on at the time and I think we also got some cash back on Quidco, so that's also something to look at.

Having said all of that one day we were really tired and didn't do an activity. It was still cheaper with the pass but possibly wouldn't have been if we had paid full price for it.

With the passes you can't book all of the attractions in advance. The Empire State Building we went to late at night (after Broadway show) and there wasn't a queue. We then did Top of the Rock first thing in the morning - was there when it opened - again no queue.

There are loads of threads on here about New York, I went through lots of them before we went and noted down things people had suggested and recommendations for restaurants. Ended up with way too many things for the time we had! Beware some things we had to book in advance - Statue of Liberty - Crown ticket (also went first thing and no queue) and Breakfast at Tiffanys too.

Re: places to eat, we made a conscious decision to eat on the run while we were in NYC. We were only there for 3 nights which included Broadway show, evening harbour cruise and NY Mets game. Was a bit of a shame as there were some good restaurant recommendations that I found on here but we didn't have time to do everything.

You can buy a pass for a better deal on groupon at the moment. I am sure it is the New York pass that’s on offer for travel before 31/12.

the only thing I am seeing that is good to pre book and pay as you go rather than a pass is 9/11 if you are planning a visit as queue times are massive at the moment.

if you are on Facebook join NYC the place to be. They will keep you right with the best deals and what’s going on right now.

You are best to have a list of what you want to see with current on the door prices listed. Choose your pass and then work out if it’s cheaper.

Here is the group on deal.

I got the SightSeeing Pass and thought it was great, hadn't been to NY before and was planning on hitting a lot of the main attractions most of which were included (I only paid separately for The Met and Summit OV both of which I recommend). It also included some great quality walking tours and other things like bike hire at Central Park... It could be purchased for either X amount of days but unlimited attractions, or for X number of attractions. I got the first option and it was 100% worth it for me, but bear in mind that it is pretty expensive, so you will want to ensure you want to do enough to make it value. A small handful of things you had to book in advance with the pass which was easy to do, but most were just walk up.

Restaurants recommendations. For casual I loved Los Tacos No. 1, Gaanesvoort Market, and The Halal Guys. More splurge places I liked were Carbone, Cosme, and Balthazar. If you're not with children I highly recommend Double Chicken Please which is an incredible cocktail bar which does quality small plates and snacks. Also Dominique Ansel Bakery is phenomenal if you are into patisserie.

I've used the GoCity new york pass and was really happy with it. We ended up saving compared to booking each attraction individually. Best to check the website and each attraction you're interested in to see if you need to prebook a slot.
