Germany, lakes, rivers. Where is nice?

We'd like to go to Germany, only been to Berlin before. We would drive and rent a place for a week or two. We'd like rivers, forests, hills. Walking, kayaking that type of thing. I have no idea where to start looking. Anyone able to offer any advice. Thank you

Lots of that sort of stuff in Bavaria - but to be honest, if you're going that far south you should just continue on to Austria (which pretty much fits your requirements for rivers, forests, hills, walking etc.)

midgetastic · 13/09/2022 18:47

Although we found Austria no nicer but much more expensive

DesMoulinsRouge · 13/09/2022 18:48

Bavaria

mathanxiety · 13/09/2022 19:22

Bodensee/ Lake Constance might be nice.

My in-laws live in the South West corner, just on the edge of the Black Forest, and it's a wonderful area. Would certainly meet all your criteria.

Otherwise, Bavaria, Lake Konstanz, or to throw a curveball, Saxony (the south east corner around Dresden) is also lovely, and close to the Czech border if you fancy heading to Prague for a few days.

Southern Bavaria, between Munich and the Austrian border? You could flit between Germany and Austria then, down past Garmisch.. lots of mountains, you could go up on a lift and hike around at the top. Also gives you the option to have a day or 2 in Munich - which is a nice city to visit.

If you had unlimited money, as it's horribly expensive, I'd stay in Switzerland, somewhere like Interlaken. It is perfect for that kind of holiday.

Livingmagicallyagain · 16/09/2022 07:01

Bavaria, Black Forest, Lake Constance or Tirol (the latter is in Austria). You'll have an amazing time and never want to holiday anywhere else!

Sausagenbacon · 16/09/2022 07:02

iliketeaagain perhaps you can advise me? We're in Innsbruck, planning to go to Augsburg next, then Trier. Is there anywhere you would advise staying between the two?

Bodensee/ Lake Constance might be nice.

I was also going to suggest this.

Or go to the north-east around Schwerin. Lots of lakes (but flat, no mountains).

MangosteenSoda · 18/09/2022 14:08

Another vote for the Lake Constance area. I stayed in Meersburg and then visted other places by boat/a quick drive.

The area around Füssen in Southern Bavaria is also lovely and, as a pp said, visit Innsbruck too if you’re down there.

The Black Forest would work too. Baden Baden is a good start point. I’d then travel up and over the border to Alsace as part of the same trip.

Also, the Mosel/Moselle is a lovely river to follow. Start at Trier and stop off at the pretty towns along the route. I really like Cochem. You can go from Mosel to Rhine and take in the many castles etc. Lots of hiking and vineyards in that area.

Could go on and on. Germany has so many nice routes to travel.

gogohmm · 18/09/2022 14:21

Titisee is lovely, Black Forest

Schulte · 27/09/2022 13:59

Bavaria. The Samerberg area is beautiful. Or you could stay near Füssen, lots of lakes and mountains to explore.

Black Forest is nice too but less to do there.

Either way beware of ticks, they’re rife in German forests…

Desmorelda · 27/09/2022 16:43

Spreewald ? Not sure about the mountains but not that far from berlin, got the lakes, forests and picturesque towns ?

Schulte · 27/09/2022 17:11

Yes I nearly said Spreewald too but definitely not hilly if I remember correctly!

hippospot · 27/09/2022 17:44

@Shreddersink I'm thinking of similar for next year. Currently like the look of a week in or near Baden Baden and a week in or near Trier.

This year we drove to Alsace and it was absolutely lovely.

Make your way through Luxembourg along the model river, then down the Rhine into the Black Forest. Freiburg, Bodensee and maybe over into Bavaria.

Traunstein is lovely. Nurnberg, Munich of course.

Endless options but def south.

ChaToilLeam · 27/09/2022 19:35

Somewhere around Tegernsee? Beautiful, great hiking, easy to get to Munich and onwards to Salzburg etc from there.

NCTDN · 27/09/2022 22:35

I was going to say the Black Forest but as beautiful as it was, Luxembourg beats it hands down!
