I'm going to Venice soon and would love some recommendations... prepared to be tourist for a few days - I've only ever been once for a wedding when I didn't have a chance to explore. Thanks all! 🙏🏻

Get a guided tour around the Jewish quarter. Really interesting.
Take the ferry out to other islands.
Wander around at random!

The biennale is open and well worth a visit; there will be other art installations remote from the main park so try to get a guide to see what interests you.
Obviously St Mark's and the Dog's palace also Peggy Guggenheim museum.
The best thing, imo, is wandering aimlessly and getting away from the main tourist trails you will find that every corner you take will provide a lovely view . It is magical but busy.

Speed read Donna Leon’s Brunetti books before you go.

Take out a second mortgage and have a hot chocolate in Florian’s.

Walk, get lost, wonder how normal things like moving house, getting white goods delivered happen!

Take the boat to Burano, gorgeous colourful little place! 🌈

Wander - I liked the Santa Croce and Dorsudoro bits best. Try and work out where to eat rather than getting sucked in knackered and hungry to somewhere awful.

Eating standing up in a bar in the evening - Italian Tapas style is way more interesting and cheaper and fun than a sit down meal.

The other islands are great - but not a must if you don't have long.

Go on a gondola definitely.

SweetFannyAdamsDog · 13/09/2022 13:52

Get tickets for the Biennale, depending on whether art or music or whatever is your thing: www.labiennale.org/en/art/2022

We did a private walking tour, which was brilliant and showed us loads of hidden streets we wouldn't have known about. Do a gondola ride as well, we loved that.

Get a water taxi from the airport, if you can, it's such a fabulous experience. About 180 euros but worth it.

Blueuggboots · 13/09/2022 13:53

You can get the public gondola between the fish market and the golden palace, far cheaper!!!

There is a beautiful little Byzantine church on Murano. The DaVinci museum is worth a visit, it’s lovely to get a boat across from near St Marks square to the Tower of San Georgio maggiore, the views from up there are amazing and there’s a nice cafe round the back of the church overlooking the lovely gardens. The rooftop terrace of the very swish Galleria T Fondaco dei Tedeschi is fab for views too, it’s right beside the Rialto bridge.
The very best thing to do in Venice is just wander around.

Scuola Grande Di San Rocco. Tintoretto paintings are awesome and the crucifixion blew me away when I saw it, it's just huge and imposing but also really sad and thoughtful, most interesting version I'd seen up to then. Lots of people just doing their thing whilst the crucifixion just happens in the midst of their lives, which they did, it wasn't an uncommon form of punishment then, but just yeah.
Also The Peggy Guggenheim museum, Brancusi and Picasso. You need to read The Unfinished Palazzo, fascinating and all about the women who lived in the museum building when it was still a home.
Enjoy!
