Driving Roscoff To Ile De Re

Hi guys.
We are planning on driving from Roscoff to Ile de Re next summer.
The quickest route as per Google maps routes us via Gungamp, Rennes and Nantes (approx 5 and a half hours).

We were thinking of maybe breaking up the drive and diverting via Carnac in Brittany to stretch the legs and grab a bite to eat etc. before continuing onto Ile de Re. Going this way routes us via Quimper, Carnac, Vannes and Nantes and is about 20 mins slower.

I'm just wondering has anyone driven these routes. Is detouring to Carnac enroute going to have us on much worse roads or is it a handy enough drive?

TIA for any advice.

The roads are nicer going the scenic route & aren’t really narrow and inaccessible. The hardest. But in that drive is the Nantes peripherique- a ring road that can be very confusing. Have an eagle eyed navigator with you.
Concarneau is worth a stop after Carnac if you’re there.

*bit in that drive

I think the traffic in Carnac can be quite bad in the summer, so maybe factor that in too.

You are planning your route for next summer?! I would look at Google maps in the morning you leave and see what the traffic situation is like to be honest.

Way too early to be planning for sure :-)
Just happened to be looking today so thought I'd post while it was in my head.

Ah, the joys of the Nantes peripherique, we did that in July. Sat nav is a good friend especially if traffic is bad

If you are travelling on a Saturday in summer I would probably go the quickest route The Nantes peripherique can be very busy and there will be a lot of people travelling to the Ile de Re area. Traffic can build up during the day. We were in Royan this summer and Google maps just kept adding time to the journey as the traffic got heavier.

I agree with checking the traffic on the morning though. Rennes ring road can also get busy so you might end up taking less time if you avoid it.

Thanks for the replies. We will be arriving into Roscoff at 7am on a Sunday morning in mid June. I assume I go via that Nantes ring road mentioned regardless of which route I take?

A Sunday in mid June will be a piece of cake! The big changeovers are Saturdays in France and the main holiday months are August followed by July. Subject to checking on the morning of your trip for eventualities I don’t see issues with your plan. I love Ré, there can be some congestion getting onto the bridge but it’s always worth it!

Yep, per PP as you are outside of major holiday time. It will still be nice and sunny in June which pre-DC was our favoured time to go away in France too.
